3 Types of Links to Know for SEO

by Kevin Smith Author

When you're creating blog posts and web pages, you need to consider what kinds of links you're going to use. Ideally, you would use all three, depending on the amount of text and their relevance. An SEO company in Atlanta can help you find the right links for you and improve your connections on the Internet.

Linking to Another Website

Some people don't want to link to other websites. However, it's important that you remember the term "web." The Internet is designed to be a complex interweaving of related information, allowing users to find the information and its originators quickly and relatively easily. By using an "outlink" and connecting to another website, you're signaling to the search engine algorithm that you're participating in construction of the web, you've done your research, and you're citing that research. These are all pluses for your search engine ranking.

Linking to Your Own Website

There are a lot of great SEO reasons to link to your own content. When someone clicks on your website and then clicks away, that is somewhat negative in terms of SEO. If they click on another link that leads to another page, you increase their dwell time on your website. The internal links also reveal to the algorithm that your site is relevant and has a structure. They improve your standing as an expert. This doesn't mean you want to stack links, especially if they are irrelevant. Still, if they are germane to the post at hand, include them.

Creating Effective Links

It's not enough to put "For more information, click here" and put the link next to it or overlayed over the "click here." Instead, you want your link to contain the important words that signify where the link goes. This can be the name of the website where you got the information, "According to the New York Times website..." It can be the information in a short quote, like "'It was amazing,' he said." Or it can be the keywords you're trying to highlight; for example, "best way to get home."

Someone Linking to Your Website

Backlinks may be the most difficult to get, but they are also among the most important. Writing quality content that people want to link to is one way. Using your YouTube channel and other social media can also help with backlinking. Sometimes, you just have to ask some to link to your website if they've used something you've created. An SEO company in Atlanta may be able to help you with backlinking while providing you with more comprehensive SEO improvements.
