3 Tips for Making Your Keto Diet a Success

by Kristopher Samuels Writer

If you are on social media, there’s a good chance you’ve probably heard about the keto diet. Maybe someone you follow on Instagram has been showing off their weight loss, or you’ve seen YouTube ads by self-described dietary experts claiming that you can build muscle and shed pounds using this one simple life-hack.

The truth is that there is hard science backing up many of these claims, and there are good reasons to consider switching to the keto diet if you want to lose weight or simply take control of your eating habits.

But switching to keto isn’t as simple as just cutting bread and beer out of your diet, and if you really want to make your diet a success, here are three things you might want to do.

1. Research How the Diet Impacts Your Body

As with any other major lifestyle change, when going keto you should make sure you understand what exactly the diet will do to your body.

“Keto” comes from the word “ketosis,” a scientific term for the state your body enters when it switches from burning carbs to burning fats. Our bodies evolved to fuel themselves on carbs and sugars first and to rely on fat stores only when the carbs and sugars run out. The keto diet essentially tricks the body into entering this state by dramatically reducing carb intake.

This is why so many people have found the diet to be helpful when it comes to losing weight. But the diet can also be hard on the body, and people with heart disease have been advised not to try it.

As with anything that could have a big impact on your health, do preliminary research and then talk to your doctor before making the change.

2. Buy High-Quality Food

The keto diet may be fat heavy, but that doesn’t mean you can eat as much cheese and greasy meat as you want. Your body needs nutrients, and fuelling yourself with nothing but sloppy joes will not give you the results you’re looking for.

Instead, you should find the freshest products that are appropriate for a keto lifestyle, especially high-quality local meats and fish.

In addition, eat lots of fatty vegetables to balance out your meat intake. Some of the most effective low-carb keto-friendly vegetables are:

  • Spinach
  • Avocado
  • Olives
  • Eggplant
  • Kale

Including as many of these vegetables as possible is the best way to keep your body strong and healthy while it burns fat.

3. Plan Ahead

Just like any other diet, the key to successfully going keto is in the planning. You’re going to experience cravings, and there are going to be times when you just want to eat a sandwich on real bread. Planning won’t take those cravings away, but it will help you manage them.

Meal prep at the beginning of the week is a great way to ensure that you have the food you need for the coming days already laid out and ready to go. This will make you less reliant on eating out, and more likely to stay in ketosis.

Thousands of people have met their weight loss goals successfully thanks to the keto diet. If you want keto to work for you, make sure you consult your doctor, stock up on healthy foods, and plan ahead — it could have a life-changing effect!
