3 Signs Your Furnace Has a Problem

by Kevin Smith Author

Does your home have a furnace? Then, you should learn about the different warning signs that may indicate that your unit has a problem. You'll be able to get it repaired sooner if you know that there's an issue. Here are a few things you should look out for.

Unusual Smells

Usually, furnaces smell a bit like the fuel that they use, especially if they haven't been turned on for a long time. But, as it continues to burn, this scent will eventually fade away. So, if you keep detecting this odor in the air, it may be a sign that there's a leak in your piping. You should turn off the system, leave your home, and get an emergency visit from your contractor.

Although less alarming than a leak, another sign of an issue is a persistent musty odor. It indicates that your air filter needs to be cleaned or changed. But, if the smell doesn't go away even if you swap this component out, you should call a professional to take a look at your system.

Uneven Heating

Do you notice that some parts of your home are less warm than others? The trouble could be with your furnace. These cold spots may mean that the machine is having a hard time producing enough heat for the entire area. There could be something blocking your ducts, or there's an issue with the mechanism itself. If your unit is fairly new, this may indicate that the size of the space is far too big for its heating capacity. You should ask a professional to assess which kind is better for your house.

In a worst-case scenario, there may be no heat produced at all. This can be terribly inconvenient during the winter season, so you should always do a test run of your furnace way before this time.

The Pilot Light Isn't Blue

Older gas furnaces have a feature called the pilot light. This is a small flame that lights the fuel as it goes into the main burner of the machine. This usually looks bright blue, indicating its extremely high burning temperature. If it's in any other color, this could mean that your unit has ventilation problems, and the fire can't get hot enough. This can also be a sign that hazardous vapors like carbon monoxide don't dissipate as they should, so you should have it checked ASAP.

These are just some warning signs that your unit has a problem. Keep them in mind, so you know when to get furnace repair in Kennesaw, GA.
