3 reasons Indian cotton industry rules the global cotton marketplace

by Rohan Sinha Author
India is home to cotton revolution. With no significant cotton crop cultivation and trade in the pre-independence era, to becoming world’s second largest cotton producer, India has certainly come a long way.

Herein this article, we’ll examine three reasons that propelled the growth of India’s textile and cotton industry and enabled it to make a mark in the global marketplace:

1.
Cotton growers
Thanks to innovative farming technologies and modified seeds, the industry no longer has to worry about raw cotton. India holds the second spot in cotton production, while China, USA, Pakistan and Brazil are the other notable cotton growing countries.

As per the latest data, total cotton sowing in India stood at 122.5 lakh hectares this year (2014-15) as compared to about 115 lakh hectares last year (2013-14). Farmer and trader sources peg India's cotton production at about 403 lakh bales this year.

2.
The industry has transformed itself with time and continues to innovate
Since independence, the cotton industry has successfully led a qualitative and quantitative transformation in itself.  As of now, the country has the capacity of 47 million spindles and 0.75 million open-end rotors. Right from the famers to the cotton yarn buyers and suppliers in India, the cotton industry has undergone a sea change.

The World Wide Web (WWW) has also added a whole new dimension to the industry by working as a flexible bridge between cotton buyers and cotton suppliers in India. Many smart cotton/textile companies have even begun to leverage these sites to explore business opportunities that were earlier not in their reach.

3.
Quality sits at the core of Indian cotton
Cotton yarn buyers in India and across the countries look for yarn that is strong, durable, and sturdy. The quality of the yarn depends on the quality of the raw cotton as well as the machines that are used to manufacture the yarn. The Indian yarn spinners, therefore, employ only the best cotton yarn manufacturing machines and skilled labour so that they can match the international quality offered by its competitors from other yarn producing nations including China, Pakistan and USA. This unrelenting focus on delivering quality yarns to their customers is what earned an enviable reputation for the Indian cotton in the international markets. Today, Indian cotton is considered a premium offering in the global market.

Besides the above listed reasons, the government’s policies also fuelled growth across the industry and helped it make a mark internationally.
