by Kanan James NGO INDIA

Every organisation work or certain principles abiding which they work towards their desired goals. Even non profit organisations like NGOs have principles under which they function and carry on their missions. The primary principles include identifying and evaluating problems, effective communication and adapting to the changing scenarios. Apart from these, there are other rules which govern NGOs and help them to help those in dire straits.

non profit organisation

NGOs or Non-Governmental Organisations are a type of Non-Profit Organisation who has contributed significantly towards the development of our country. Ever since the first NGO was set up, there has been no looking back. The works of an NGO contribute to the country’s greater good, be it socially or economically. The external functions of an NGO affect various segments of our country which include-

·         Socio-Cultural

·         Economical

·         Legal

·         Technological

·         International

The burden of improving the lives of the impoverished is a gargantuan task which needs to be done with perseverance. NGOs who have continuously served the mankind know what pains it takes to run an organisation that operates primarily on funds. In order to understand what all goes in order for an NGO to be successful, we must be aware of its basic principles. To get a deeper understanding, the following points should help you:

Identifying and evaluating the problem:

In order to innovate a solution, one needs to identify the problem. NGOs delegate members to do extensive research and development on particular issues and work accordingly. There are millions of people in India who are devoid of the basic luxuries of life, such non-governmental institutions work with a lot of zeal to provide the access to all the amenities on a daily basis. The nature of the problem has to be identified first. Is it general or specific? Investigating those problems is a mandatory step and how is it affecting the target individuals or communities. With effective management, they strategies plan and gather resources to proceed. What follows next is the evaluation.

Communication:

Whether it’s intrapersonal, interpersonal or mass, communication holds importance. As a social work organisation, an NGO is liable to answer how judiciously it is using the funds to provide amenities to those who are/were leading a miserable life. Moreover, NGOs need to create trust among the communities to prove in what ways they will help their conditions to become better. This is purely based on trust for which the organisations need to facilitate talks and lectures, emphasising on proper and skilled communication. Following a vertical channelization of information, NGOs need to answer the government(s) regarding their developmental policies regarding communities, how they’ll fulfil them and the time to be taken.

Another important aspect of communication is creating awareness among the citizens. The NGOs need to disseminate all the necessary information that relates to poverty, disability, child labour, exploitation, proper sanitation and other issues that need to be spread to the masses. The correct message has to be sent then only audiences around the country will be aware.

Acclimatize to transient and developing scenarios:

Development is the key to a nation’s success and survival in the long run. One has to learn to adapt to changes. NGOs are one of the first organisations which have come to terms with it. NGOs in India in the last two decades have done tremendous work not just in creating a framework of development for the downtrodden individuals or communities but also implemented them. Numerous infrastructural works have been done by NGOs like setting up buildings for orphans, displaced and old people to live, lavatories in rural and urban areas to provide proper sanitation, community-based enterprises, creating material supply centres and many other functions that make NGOs carry the baton of development with pride.

Despite every effort put in by NGOs in India, eradicating problems seems a gargantuan task if not impossible. Problems like providing education and home to orphans, shelters to displaced senior citizens, voicing and battling for human and animal rights, empowering women, removal of child labour, conservation of wildlife and environment, fighting social injustice and list goes on. But there is a list of principles constituted that help NGOs to march on towards their mission. While these were the 3 standard ones followed by most social work organisations in our country, there are other in-house guidelines that the institutions adhere to.

Have you ever worked with NGO? If yes, did you notice these principles being followed? Do share your experience with us.
