Teijin Ltd. decided to establish a plant that will have the ability to mass-produce carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic components.
In a Nov. 30 news release, the company said that the plant will be the world’s first of its kind, fully integrated from production of carbon fiber on-site, all the way to finished parts. The incorporated process will decrease cycle times for molding parts to less than a minute. That will permit faster production of prototypes as well as performance evaluation tests.
The 2 billion yen (about 163 million yuan) pilot plant will be situated at Teijin’s Matsuyama factory in Ehime Prefecture, Japan.
However, the plant construction will begin in short time along with operations scheduled to start in mid 2012. Teijin said its mass production technique has the potential to help automakers use more lightweight carbon fiber parts.
