2012 London Olympic Medals Photo Design

by Stephen Daguiar Writer The 2012 London Olympics medals are said to be the biggest medals to date since medals were presented to event winners in the first Olympic Games in 1896.

Designed by artist David Watkins the minted London Olympic medals has thickness of 7mm, diameter of 85mm and weights 400g. The medal design displays the key symbols on front is the goddess Nike as the spirit and tradition of the Games, with river Thames on the background which represents the city of London.

On the back of the medals is the 2012 branding, shown against a 'pick-up-sticks' grid which radiates the energy of athletes and a sense of pulling together. 'The bowl-like background recalls ancient amphitheatres, with a square balancing the circle to give a sense of place', as BBC phrase it. The sport and discipline is to be engraved on the rim of each medal. The 4,700 thoroughly minted medals are produced by the Royal Mint at Llantrisant, South Wales.

London Summer Games website reported the arrival of the medals and will be housed at the Tower of London for safe keeping. "The gold, silver and bronze medals will be securely locked away in the famous vaults and will remain there until they are needed for the Victory Ceremonies. In total, 4,700 medals will be awarded in 805 Victory Ceremonies that will take place in over 30 London 2012 venues across the UK." according to the site.

The Tower of London is used by British monarchs for over 600 years to hoard crowns and jewels, no wonder so as the London Olympic precious metals.
