Batman Probably Had Sciatica

by Mitch Tarala
Do you remember the scene in the Batman movie when Batman was hanging upside down by his feet before being interrupted by Alfred the butler? Well I've come to the obvious conclusion that Batman must suffer from sciatica, just like I do.

For those of you that don't know what sciatica is, it is a set of symptoms that often stem from a back injury that has caused a bulging or herniated disc. The symptoms of sciatica include radiating or shooting pains down one or both legs, tingling and numbness in one or both legs, 'zingers' or electrical shooting pains, and the feeling of pins-and-needles, also in one or both of the legs.

The reason I suspect that Batman is a sciatica sufferer is because of that scene in the movie where he can be seen using what are often called gravity boots. This device is used to allow you to hang upside down from your feet and allow gravity to stretch your spine and remove any excess pressure on the discs which is great for people who are suffering from disc injuries or sciatica.

Other common ways to get sciatic relief by decompressing the spine include a device called the Nubax Trio, inversion tables, decompression belts, expensive high tech machines that are usually only found in high class rehabilitation centers, and a wide range of other devices and methods for simply relieving the pressure on the discs.

When the pressure is removed from the discs they are given a chance to regenerate themselves and enjoy a fresh flow of healing fluids and blood circulation. The discs will often stop bothering the sciatic nerve roots while in a decompression, causing most of the pain to disappear, although this effect is usually only temporary and the pain returns shortly after the decompression is finished and the pressure once again begins to build on the discs.

I cannot say for sure that it is the reason Batman uses gravity boots, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Batman might just be a fellow back pain sufferer after seeing that movie.
