Healthy US economy luring more learner
by Hardeep Saini SEOMore Indian candidates are willing to take a chance and quit
their jobs to pursue higher studies in the US with universities also being more
generous with their scholarships, said C Vijayalakshmi, educational advisor, United
States-India Educational Foundation.
Commenting on the current trend in higher education in the US,
she said that there were more takers this year primarily because the recession
had passed thereby making the economic climate healthier. "We are seeing
more students going to the US
with some sort of financial assistance this year when compared to last
year," she added.
As many as 14 universities participated in the Linden US University Fair that
came to the city on Thursday.
According to Jobeth Brudner, tour leader of the Linden US University Fair ? the
firm that conducts the event ? university representatives have made stops at Kathmandu,
New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore in the last two weeks.
"Five out of seven students are enquiring about computer science,
engineering and business management courses. Students are interested more about
the academic details such as what the courses are like, the eligibility criteria
for admission and availability of financial aid than about life on campus and
presence of other international students. We are also seeing greater interest
for undergraduate studies in the US
from Mumbai and Bangalore,"
she said.
Another plus point for students is that the visa application forms have been
uploaded online this year in order to make it easier for applicants. A few
business schools in the US
are also accepting GMAT instead of GRE scores to take students in for the
course. Officials added that the time frame to get visa appointments had also
dropped from 10 days to three days. Applicants who appear for the interview are
also informed whether they will get the visa or not the very same day,
authorities said.
