EDTV stands for Enhanced Definition Television. EDTV quality is considered to rival that of DVD. It is broadcast mostly in a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Here are two standard of EDTV.

PAL --> It refers to a video mode where the vertical resolution is 576 and the horizontal resolution is 768. It runs at a framerate of 50fps (progressive, not to be confused with 50 interlaced fields).

NTSC --> It refers to a video mode where the vertical resolution is 480 and the horizontal resolution is 640. It runs at a framerate of 60 fps (progressive, not to be confused with 60 interlaced fields).

Both NTSC and PAL standard are often referred to as 480p and 576p (or 480p60 and 576p60).
