Off the Internet, viral marketing has been referred to as "word-of-mouth," "creating a buzz," "leveraging the media," and "network marketing." But on the Internet, for better or worse, it's called "viral marketing." Some people may find the term "viral marketing" to be offensive - mainly because of that word "virus". Indeed, call yourself a viral marketer and people will take two steps back and maybe even ask you "Do they have a vaccine for that yet?"

Virus? What the hell does a virus have to do with marketing? Well, viral marketing describes any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message's exposure and influence. Like viruses, such strategies take advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message to thousands and even  to millions. Viral marketing is an idea that spreads... and an idea that while it is spreading actually helps market your business or cause. Put another way, viral marketing is any marketing technique that induces Web sites or users to pass on a marketing message to other sites or users, creating a potentially exponential growth in the message's visibility and effect. In other words, it's a "virus" that is carried over the Internet to various Web "hosts" or people. Much like a virus in the real world. Viral marketing can be considered to be a very cost-effective way to generate awareness.

Great article Fred I agree with Paula the term viral sounds vicious but I do like the concept. Another great way for information to go viral is to ReTweet it on twitter,some times a RT has the same effect.
