The 4 Keys To Choosing a Domain Name

If you want to be successful with Internet Marketing then you almost always need to have your own domains. And for each domain to be successful you really need to choose a good domain name. Here are the 4 keys to choosing a domain name that will be successful.

1.  .com is the BEST Extension

If a particular domain name isn't available with a .com then a lot of people will simply grab the .org or the .net. For example, you might want to get readbooks.com but it isn't available so you'll grab the "readbooks" with any extension that's available. But this could be a huge mistake.

When people try to return to your site they will almost always type in a domain using the .com and not the right extension. You can lose a lot of business this way. So whenever possible make sure you go with a .com domain name.

2.  Make it Easy to Remember

The next key to choosing a domain name is to make the name easy to remember. This should be obvious yet many people fail to do this.

They choose some combination of words that might have meaning to them but doesn't have any meaning to anyone else. Or they choose words that are confusing so no one can really tell what they say.

Make sure you choose a domain name that is as simple as possible and is easy to remember.

3.  Remember the Traffic

Another key to a great domain name is a domain name that draws in traffic because of its name. For example, if you want to get traffic for "make money online" then you would love to get the domain name makemoneyonline.com. Just having that name will help you to get more traffic. It will help you rank well for those keywords.

4.  Don't Get Yourself into Trouble

The final key for choosing a domain name is to make sure you don't get yourself into trouble. You need to make sure you don't violate any laws or copyrights with your domain name. For example, you can't create a sneaker website and call it niko.com. That's too close to nike.com. and it will get you in trouble.

4 keys to choosing a domain name are to get a .com whenever possible, to make your domain name easy to remember, to grab a name that will help you get traffic, and to make sure you don't get yourself in trouble. Make sure you follow these 4 keys when you are grabbing a domain name for yourself.

Bonus tip from me:  I firmly believe it is what's between the two dots that matter when it comes to generating search engine traffic.  So, when a .com that you want is not available, it's OK to get a .net, .org, .ws, .info, etc.

For example, when you conduct a search on the words "Team Vision", you will find one of my .ws websites listed on page 2 of Google.  As of this writing, that is a ranking of #15 out of 61,000,000 results.

So with that being said, when it comes to sharing your website with others, get a .com.  For search engine results, it's okay to have alternative extensions.

To your incredible success

U.S. Pride Home Specialists Freshman
Good info here. My question is, How long of a domain namr is too long. I work for a remodeling company (U.S. Pride Home Specialists) And when they bought the domain any shorter version of that was taken so we ended up with www.uspridehomespecialists.com

My question is, Do i use different terms than the company name to shorten length?

The shorter the domain name, the better. However, it is not necessary. To shorten it, sometimes acronyms work. Looking at your domain, I do not think it is too long.

Frank... great information here.
When I first started I bought a few names for my
blogs. I put _ _ in the name so it would be easier to read
That was pretty silly, I find that the Google spiders
are able to read it all together just fine. And the spiders
are very important too.

U.S. Pride.....I don't think your website address is to long either looks good to me.
Thanks again Frank for the lesson.

Hey Frank,

You got some great info here, I never released about point-4 that you would be violateing laws and copyrights. I have seen in past folks on twitter getting accounts closesd for this type of thing. So good to know this sort of stuff.

Thanks

Mick

US pride, although shortened names can be great I think that you have a very good name. If someone were to see your name and need to do a search for you, they will remember enough to actually search specifically for you.

Also another thing Thanks to bjantiques mentioning it to me and from seeing how it can affect online searches if possible buy every domain you can For example www.XYZ.com .net.org etc. That way if someone searches for XYZ company and they get .org or .net it is still your company rather than someone going to a different site that has nothing to do with you.
