13 Tips for a Warm and Safe Winter
by Coffeyref Refrig Coffey RefrigerationWashington is a great place to live and quite
beautiful. Yet, it sure does get cold in the winter! You can’t do much about
the temperature outside, but there is a lot you can control about how it feels
inside your commercial building. Keep reading for easy tips and tricks to keep
your building not only warm but also safe this season:
#1 Wrap the water pipes in your basement or crawl space with insulation
sleeves.
#2 Is your hot water heater
insulated? This can save your company hundreds or even thousands this winter.
Examine purchasing an insulated cover for your hot water heater.
#3 Many older buildings still have
one or several fireplaces. The fireplace is a good source of heat, but before
you turn it on, be sure to have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a
professional. The fireplace could release carbon monoxide if it isn’t properly
cleaned and maintained.
#4 Be sure to keep your fireplace
flue closed when not in use.
#5 Make sure window fixtures,
furniture, or anything else isn’t blocking your heating vents. You’ll be
turning your furnace higher and higher and wondering why you still aren’t
feeling the heat!
#6 A big mistake is having someone
turn off the furnace when the last person leaves in the evening. Keep your
building heated overnight to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
#7 If your building will be unused
for a while, like maybe you are closing for two weeks over the holidays, you
may want to consider draining the water pipes.
#8 Make sure that carbon monoxide
detectors are installed on each floor of your office or commercial building,
and test them to confirm they are working properly.
#9 Make sure your furnace has been tuned up by someone who handles
commercial HVAC maintenance in Kennewick, WA and is qualified to perform at
maximum efficiency during the cold months ahead.
#10 Have the same technician who handles commercial HVAC maintenance in Kennewick check your heating system to ensure that there are no leaks or carbon monoxide issues.
#11 Make it a priority to change the air filter in your furnace every month. This is easily forgotten in a commercial setting, but just as important as in your home. This will prevent the restriction of air flow which will aggravate respiratory issues of your staff members and customers.
#12 It’s easy to lose warm air to a window with a very thin curtain, or no covering at all. Add thick or thermal curtains to help retain warm air inside your building.
