So many internet "networkers" still don't understand the word or have any clue as to what networking is and how it works, so let me present you with a classic example.

Jane Doe's New House

Let's say that Jane Doe is tired of living in Big City and has decided that it's time to buy a new house in Anytown, step one is to look at some houses so she finds Ms Realtor.  This realtor understands the power of networking and uses it.  Jane looks around and with the realtor's help finds her dream home.  Well the next step would be securing a loan right?  Ms. Realtor taps into her network to tell Jane about Mr Mortgage as an option to securing her mortgage.

Jane visits Mr Mortgage who gets her a loan with a great interest rate.  However Mr Mortgage knows that Jane will have to have insurance on her home.  Mr Mortgage tells Jane About Mr Insurance.  Mr Insurance can help her get her home insured.  When Jane sits down with Mr Insurance and they are listing her possessions for the policy, Mr Insurance notices the home has a pool.  The pool will need upkeep.  It just so happens that Mr Insurance has a pool too and he uses Swimmer's Pool Care, owned and operated by none other than Mr Swimmer.

Jane now calls Mr Swimmer who comes right over to do the maintenence on her pool.  While he's there he notices the yard needs work, the flower beds are overgrown with weeds and the grass is brown.   Well Mr Green has many clients in common with Mr Swimmer and does a great job of making peoples yard look beautiful.  Now Jane has Mr. Green come over to take a look at her yard.  As they are talking Mr Green mentions that his son just moved to Big City and is looking for a good restaurant to take his wife out to celebrate their anniversary at which time Jane Pipes up and recommends her favorite restaurant.

That's five good solid referrals out of one woman's move. And that is what networking is about referrals or word of mouth advertising.  You don't get referrals from spam.  You don't get referrals from constantly advertising.  You get referrals from people who know you, You get referral from building relationships and trust.  You have to get to know people if you want networking to work for you!

Popular Yes you hit the nail on the head. What's strange is people network all the time with friends but when it comes to business they tend to just blast ads and forget about relationship building..

Cheryl, this was a great post and I think more networkers need to read it. It seems like so may people are interested in reporting business owners for spamming rather than thinking of a way to connect with them. After all, people who join the social networks do so to network. But, too many seem to forget or don't realize the value of the people who are connected to them. I try to refer people who come to me with their products and I don't need them. I get to know what the people who are connected to me are looking for, and if I can send someone their way, then I am doing what social networkers are supposed to do. It doesn't matter if they send someone back or not.
