Types of Heart Disease

Different types of heart disease exist, and one can have one or more than one type. It might be something which the person was born with, like an abnormality of the heart, or something which builds up over time, like an arterial blockage. Some factors which trigger heart disease are within the person's ability to control, like whether they exercise or smoke, which foods they consume, while some other factors cannot be controlled, such as age, gender, and ethnicity.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is what comes to mind when most people think of heart disease. Angina, or a feeling of heaviness, squeezing or tightness in the chest area which can easily be mistaken for symptoms of heartburn or indigestion, is the most well-known symptom of CAD. But other symptoms can also be warning signs of coronary artery disease. These include accelerated heartbeat, excessive sweating and shortness of breath.

Commonly referred to a heart attack, a common type of heart disease is myocardial infarction (MI). Signs are similar to coronary artery disease but they are of a greater intensity. They can begin as a light pain, but gets progressively stronger. This problem could have a 30 minute or longer duration, but it won't go away with pain medicine or resting. Heart attack symptoms have to be taken care of right away.

One type of heart disease that is common is arrhythmia or abnormal heart rhythm. Arrhythmia often is characterized by heart palpitations, weakness, or fainting spells. One category of arrhythmia is called atrial fibrillation (AF) where the upper chambers of the heart do not function properly.

There is a cluster of symptoms surrounding heart valve disease. They include shortness of breath, feelings of weakness, heart palpitations, dizziness, and chest discomfort that is particularly marked when moving from warm air to cold air. If these symptoms go unchecked and are followed by heart failure, even more symptoms can be expected. These include very rapid weight gain, swelling in the belly or abdomen, swelling in the feet and ankles. However, the severity of the particular heart disease is not necessarily related to the severity or number of symptoms manifested.

Cardiomyopathy or heart muscle disease may show no symptoms whatsoever. If there are symptoms, they may be present at any age. The symptoms of cardiomyopathy are like the symptoms one finds with other types of heart disease, including fainting, swelling, palpitations, and arrhythmia.

Pericarditis is a type of heart disease which differs from coronary artery disease. One characteristic symptom is a very sharp chest pain which can also spread to the back, arms, and neck. It is worse when one is lying down, coughing, swallowing, or breathing deeply. Sitting forward offers some relief.
