All of you may have seen at one time or another, whether online or offline, a person in a leadership role that should Not have been in that position to begin with. It takes a specific set of skills to be able to lead a group of people and manage a business, and if a person doesn't have those skills, it usually winds up being a disaster for everyone involved.
From my experiences online and offline, a leader needs the following skills and abilities. There may be more, but here are just a few key requirements:
1. Understand the business from the inside out.
2. Able to plan for the future of the business and the people involved.
3. Remain focused on the objective and be pro-active, Not just re-active.
4. The skills to be able to make decisions and stick to those decisions, Not just "sit on the fence" about things.
5. Clear and Concise thinking as well as Clear, Concise and Swift actions, Not allowing things to get out of control.
6. The skills and abilities necessary to delegate responsibilities and see that they are done correctly and immediately.
7. ...And finally but probably not the last, The ability to Manage.
Some people may think that there is no place for them if they can't be in a leadership position, That's NOT true. Just because there is a person above you in a leadership role doesn't mean that you are insignificant in any way. Many leaders or managers need the skills and abilities of those that are under them in order to complete the objectives at hand.
A person may be gifted to manage or lead, but they might also be totally inept at everything else or at least what needs to be accomplished other than managerial work. Everyone plays an important role within a business and it doesn't matter if it's online or offline. Everyone is Gifted in one way or another, your Gift may just be the crucial element needed for a business to become a success or remain on top.
If you are not sure what your Gift is, I encourage you to take stock of yourself and try to discover what it is.
Maybe you are Gifted in helping others, that's great...you could be the person that everyone goes to in Human Resources or Recruiting or Maybe Customer Service (which is important by the way), word of mouth is much more powerful than any advertising campaign you can think of to promote.
Maybe you are Gifted in technical or mechanical expertise, that's great also...you could be the person that builds the I.T. Infrastructure for a business...or maybe an operating engineer that keeps everything running to provide a stable work environment so everyone else can get their work accomplished.
Maybe you are Gifted in calculating numbers; excellent...you may be the one who saves huge amounts of money for the business...or maybe lead the business into a more profitable position through investment opportunities.
Not everyone is Gifted to Lead or Manage, but you may have the Gift that a Leader or Manager needs.
Please, if you are not Gifted with the ability to Lead or Manage a business or the people within, then don't attempt to do it. I'm not saying that you shouldn't aim high; I'm just saying that you shouldn't position yourself and those under you for failure because you are trying to do something that you were not Gifted to do.
Another misconception is a degree from a University or College. There are some smart people out there with degrees…that is true. Although, there are those walking around with a degree that have no street smarts at all. I know some of you understand what I mean here.
It's good to have Book Smarts, but it's just as important to have Street Smarts also. I've seen where people all puffed up with their Degree get into a position that requires Street Smarts and common sense that get burnt out very quickly and often don't recover from it.
So, if you are part of a group that is looking to start a business and none of you are Gifted to Manage it, seek out a person that you can trust and has the necessary Gift to fill the position. Placing the right person in charge can mean the difference between a business that flourishes and one that never gets off the ground. The difference between a satisfied workforce and a complete walk out of the entire staff, or key individuals.
Work as a collective and take full advantage of the combined Gifts within the business, as long as you do that...chances are that you will be part of a successful business that has many profitable years ahead of it.
Take Care,
Chris
