How to Set up Your Own Website and Domain for Less Than $10 a Year
In business, it is very important for you to have your own website and domain because it makes you look more serious, more professional, and more believable. But on a tight budget, it can be expensive to get everything started.
First you have to register a domain, which costs anywhere from $10 - $15, and then you have to pay for a host, which can be as cheap as $5 a month, but you'll have to pay for a year upfront. To get started, you are looking at a payment of $70 plus tax all at once. This discouraged me from setting up my own website for a long time, but here was my workaround. I went to Google Aps, and for $10 I registered ReesieRocks.com. Google Aps also comes with 200 e-mails, and shared Google applications such as calenders, documents, a basic site builder, and a few other neat-o tools. It keeps you registered for one year. If you want an even cheaper domain, you can go directly to Godaddy.com and get one for less than $5, but there aren't as many bells and whistles. Next, I signed up with Prohost, which is a site that will host your website for free. Your free domain will look something like "reesierocks.white.prohost.com." Third, I set up ReesieRocks.com to point at my website on Prohost. To do this log into your Google Aps account, go to domain settings, and click on "advanced DNS settings." This will take you to a page with a username, password, and link to your godaddy.com DNS login. Login to godaddy.com and you should be on the domains manager tab. Click on the checkbox next to your domain. Click on NameServers. A box will appear. Where it says nameserver 1 type in "ns1.dns-solutions.net" and under nameserver 2 type in "ns2.dns-solutions.net" then click ok. Now you may have to wait for up to 48 hours for the changes to take place, but I only had to wait for about 4 hours. Once some time has passed, login to your prohost account and click on "domain pointers." Type your domain into the box (i.e. ReesieRocks.com), and click ok. If it gets denied, wait a little longer, if it goes through great! You'll only need to wait for a few minutes for your settings to take effect. When everything is done, and you typeyour domain into a browser, it will point to your page that is hosted for free. This is how to get your very own domain and website for $10 or less per year. | Thanks for the comment Lisa. I agree with you. I think that this is a workable option for someone that is looking for an incredibly low cost to start up their website. Once they start getting traffic, hopefully they are making enough money from their traffic to upgrade to a paid hosting service with more room.

| I looked at your article and think some of this article has merit. I have used free hosters many moons ago and I can say for sure I was not impressed with their service, (perhaps your one is different), You have no gaurantees and it does not fit much. If you start getting traffic you are in trouble. Most companies do monthly charges on subscription just check places like berylp hosting. What I appreciated you sharing with others is you are showing how low the costs can be with setting up your fully control domain. I can see for those that have no money that this is an option, I do however think if someone has very little money and starting out a blog is a great way to start with a domain. Godaddy is quite a good service. Saying all this, I think its admirable you doing it and doing it well. It proves it can be done & look good. Lisa Lomas Do you know how to plan Success? |
