Wi-Fi? More like Wi-not!

So you have a meeting at your local coffee shop.  You know, the one with the free wi-fi?  Since you got there a little early, you decide to use the spare time to get a few bills paid.  So you break out your laptop and pickup the wi-fi signal.  You pull up you online banking information and start doing your transactions.  Totally safe right?

Well I don't know ask TJX,  DWS warehouse, Barnes & Noble, Office Max, Boston Market or any of the other retailers targeted by the Identity theft ring who eavesdropped on the stores' transactions.  Is safe to send information over wi-fi?

Indictments were handed down for 11 people in five countries.  This is being called the most complex Identity theft scheme to date by authorities.   The ring operated by doing what authorities are calling "war-driving"  Simply riding around to find signals they could snatch out of the air.

If the wireless networks that stores are using to conduct transactions are that easy to steal, How much easier is it to eavesdrop on your coffee shop bill paying session?

I wonder if ING Direct was affected...

They were at the forefront on this wireless coffee shop thing, and they also are a very popular savings bank, too.

Haven't heard a peep out of them, and it makes me wonder...

I do use a wireless router at home but you have to have the key to get into the network. Much safer than "public" wireless but I still don't do any transactions online.

This is good news and bad news all at once, Cheryl! :)

I was thinking of going wireless by the end of the year because it's so much more convenient.... Although I never make purchases like this online, I certainly would want to be as secure as possible, especially when I'm blogging my Erotica at the Baked Chicken Place, LOL! :)
