"Yekaterinburg." a Yekaterinburg Travel Page by ddrhea
Ekaterinburg, Russia 2000...Yekaterinburg (also transliterated as Ekaterinburg or Jekaterinburg) (Russian: Екатеринбу́рг) is a major city in central Russia, the administrative center of Sverdlovskaya Oblast. Situated on the Asian side of the Ural mountain range, at 56°51′ N 60°36′ E It is the main industrial and cultural center of the Ural region. Its population of 1,300,000 (2002) makes it Russia's fifth largest city. City is growing fast and it is expected to become the third largest in Russia. Between 1924 and 1991, the city was known as Sverdlovsk (Russian: Свердло́вск), After the Russian revolution of 1917 there were new heros and Sverdlov, one of communist leaders was one of them. So, the old city of Ekaterinburg was re-named after him. The German spelling of Ekaterinburg is Yekaterinburg though this version is not so widesperad as the first one. There is no universal rule on how to transliterate Russian names in other languages, so there are variances.

Park in Ekaterinburg, Russia
Pictures from Russia..People are very friendly here, though an average fellow would hardly understand a word in English or any other language exept his native Russian. English is usually taught as a second language in most schools. There is a large street called Lenina, you can’t miss this one. It is a street, but a part of it looks like a boulevard, with the pedestrian walkway and the trees in the middle. Assuming you are at the top part of the street (#1 see Map) you will see the park and the monument with an “Eternal Flame” to commemorate the people died during the wars at the very top. Let’s walk down Lenina Street for a few blocks. We end up with 1905 year square, (#2) the main square of Ekaterinburg. On your left you can see the Lenin monument, one of the few in Russia surviving perestroika. The general trend at the time was to get rid of all Lenin monuments and many were destroyed, but in Ekaterinburg, people always were skeptical about the trends from the other parts of Russia and it was decided that Lenin will be here to stay. In fact, before the Russian revolution, there was a magnificent cathedral here. It was destroyed and Lenin monument was build on it’s foundation. Have a look down, the stones the road is made of are two centuries old. They remember the horse carriages and the revolutioners marching the streets and taking up the power in 1917.

Opera
One of the most beautiful buildings in Ekaterinburg is the Opera House. It was built in 1912 and many famous artists played in this theatre like Sergey Lemeshev, Ivan Kozlovsky, Irina Arkhipova. Operas and ballets attract both theatre-lovers and townspeople who like the Arts. Luxury interiors of the theater, skills of the actors and producers, traditional Russian spirit of the theatre – all this you will be able to experience if you visit our Opera.
The theatre season lasts from September to July. On the week days they give one play at 6.30 pm and at the weekends there are two plays: one at 11 am and the second is at 6 pm. As the tickets are extremely cheap they are sold off long before the day of the performance especially on the most famous plays like "Swans Lake", "Nutcracker", "Karmen" and "Eugene Onegin". |

Russian family
Russian family in Ekaterinburg, Russia. Families in Russia are very close. Traditionally families have lived together -- sometimes three or even four generations -- under one roof. This is not usually due to a shortage of apartments as is commonly and widely believed. This practice is, however, due to a remarkable closeness and respect down through the generations.
Russian families seem to rely on one another even more than many western families. Having the entire family together in the same home appears to be a special comfort to them. Here is picture of a mother her daughter, her daughter husband, and their daughter. |

Frequently asked questions about Ekaterinburg
Q: why do I see two different names for your city: Ekaterinburg and Yekaterinburg?
A: there are two ways of writing our city name. First is direct transliteration from Russian into English while the second one gives closer phonetics. Both names are absolutely equal.
Q: why do I see Sverdlovsk instead of Ekaterinburg on the map?
A: buy a new one! Yours is probably published during Soviet Era when our city name was Sverdlovsk from 1926 till 1991. It was renamed after Jakob Sverdlov, local communist leader, Lenin's comrade. Original name Ekaterinburg was given back after Soviet Union collapsed |
