Painting Technique using Impasto

I am an emerging artist producing fine contemporary New Zealand Maori art.

I have used Impasto, a Fine Art Supplies product for a few years now.  I draw a few lines and build the specially thick paint up into a multi dimensional work.

I set up a work bench next to the canvas, all within arms reach of the canvas and smear the paint into place. I use one or two colours, sometimes many colours. I apply the paint in layers, wait for it to dry and then continue forming the ideas.

Some work sessions can include work on several pieces, as well as drawings and carvings.

Sometimes it can take a couple of years before I finish a piece. I am experimenting with different paint smearing techniques. I have found it profound that the condition of my brushes has a lot to do with the result I get. I trim off damaged bristles with a box cutter, which can also be used to cut a new shape of the brush.

I use as least amount of water as possible when cleaning up my tools.
