Don\'t be afraid to call or email a professional and ask for an estimate, whether you plan to use them or not. Most basic sites, if you\'re willing to do some of the busy-work yourself (like plugging in text and so forth), can be built for under $500, often half that. Now to find the low cost web design professional for you. This is a little trickier. You want someone knowledgeable, but not overpriced. If your needs are high and your budget isn\'t, you might also consider hiring a greenhorn who is just getting started in the business. Often these people are more than happy to do a lot of extra for nothing so they can build a reference and portfolio to use to get more clients. Just be aware that they might make promises they can\'t deliver on or get in over their head and not have a way out. Finally, before we start talking about actual sites and places to go to find a low cost web design professional, just remember that when you\'re looking at these providers, you need to be evaluating them completely. By all means, use your gut instincts with your choice, but make sure that whomever you\'re going with has the ability to do what it is that you want: look at their portfolio, check their references, and get as firm a quote as you can nail them down to for your project. With the exception of eBay, all of these sites are geared towards pairing online professionals with people like you who need their help. On all three of those, you post a project and the professionals come to you with bids. You choose the best bid based on price, portfolio, and so forth. You can often find many low cost web design firms and professionals at places like this. One caveat: if you are planning to talk to the person face-to-face or over the phone, be aware that many of those who bid on projects on these sites are from foreign countries and may not speak your language clearly. If you\'re looking for someone in your area, however, you\'re going to need to do a little more footwork. It can be worth it, though, if you want someone you can call locally, meet with for consultation, and otherwise build a relationship with. In this case, you\'ll want to use your local newspapers and ad sources. One of my favorites is your local classified ads paper (called something like “Traders” or “Big Nickel”). These are much cheaper to advertise in than most newspapers, so you\'re more likely to find budget services, like low cost web design, in them. Many of them are online as well. Another solution in this regard would be checking the online classifieds in the phone book: try whitepages.com or yellowbook.com. Often lower-budget advertisers will opt to only publish their ad online and will forgo the more expensive phone book ad.
