Think Saftey when being pulled over by the police! |
|
There was an alert published in our local paper about a cop impersonator out pulling people over. It seems the intended victim (what was planned, I don't know) turned out to be the real thing and the suspect fled the scene. The bogus cop was driving an unmarked police vehicle complete with lights in the grill. It made me think about the safety tips we used to give people for how to act during a traffic stop. This made me think it was time to get these tips out again.
Do not stop in dark deserted areas Slow down or even put on your flashers and drive slowly to the nearest well lit place to pull over. It's even better if the place is populated such as a convenience store or restaurant. Explain to the officer that you did not feel comfortable pulling over in a deserted area. Public areas are not only safer for you but also in the long run safer for them. The officer still may ticket you for not pulling over immediately, but if he does accept the ticket and fight it in court. Better safe than sorry. Be aware of your movements in the vehicle Remember that the officer does not know what you are reaching for. Traffic stops are one of the most dangerous calls an officer can handle. They do not know who they are pulling over and many officers get shot during "routine" traffic stops. Be courteous to the officer The officer is just doing his job, but taser incidents happen on a regular basis. If you are uncooperative or belligerent you could end up on YouTube getting zapped. get protected before it happens to you |

| That was one of the things that I applauded my department for. No officer was allowed to carry a taser until they had been tased themselves. The taser was the last resort before going on to deadly or injuring force. In the 12 years I worked there we only had about 3 taser incidents and no shootings. And the taser only came out in situations in which someone used or presented an actual threat to the officer. That's the way they should be used.

| oh my Goddddd... this is really badddd... I could not watch the whole thing, I got shivers from her pain. And all for what....that she asked for his name and unit #? This taser thing has to be revisited; I think he was too quick to react. I do think however that we should cooperate to make life easier and avoid PAIN.

| It's not "law enforcement" it's the bad apples that get the publicity. Most cops go through their entire career without ever getting into an incident, the media just does not talk about them. And many of these shooting are also the bad apples. Tasers however are a different animal altogether. They were meant to be a non-lethal alternative to the Glock, however it seems many departments are using them as a compliance tool instead. That comes down to lack of training. In the county I worked in in Florida, no officer could be cleared to carry a taser until they had gone through 8 hours of training including being on the receiving end of one. It made them think twice about using them. They also had to fill out a crapload of paperwork whenever they used it to justify "Use of Force". The video is not there to piss anyone off but to show what can happen when you are not thinking safety during contact with the police. get protected before it happens to you |

| There are so many accidental shootings here , including some that are very questionable... City folks are always on their guard when interacting with police...

| That just really pisses me off. That video. Much reasons why I have NO respect for law enforcement.

| Yes they can be life saving. When I was still working for the department I often rode on shift with my officers and from a cruiser you really cannot tell what the movement is. All you can really tell is that someone is reaching for "something". Hopefully it is license or registration but it could be gun.

| Great tips! Could be life saving! My son has one of those laser lights. One nite, without thinking, he pulls it out in the car, and beams it clear across the street. I got pulled over, and the lady cop had her hand on her gun. I was scared...sh_ _less. I told my son, just to sit very still. I was almost in tears. I knew she probably thought we had a gun.
What a relief, I just happend to know her, and I said, officer so and so...it's me Lisa. Swhooh. Not something one should take lightly. We are human, and humans make errors. Some are not errors..we won't go into that, I'll get on my soap box..lol. But..some..are. :( Thanks for sharing this info with us, Cheryl. BIG Crumbs |
