Have you had your fatty fish today?

Since having my cholesterol checked recently, I've become a little more diet conscious.
This is bad news for you all,  because you are all now going to suffer the results of
my research into it.   :-)

It seems that Omega 3 oils, found in oily fish, are very good for you, and are reputed to help with the following conditions:

high cholesterol, arthritis, chronic fatigue, allergies, migraines, and depression.

They may also help with the prevention of heart disease, maintaining optimum blood pressure, and thus protecting you agains cardiovascular disease.     It's possible they may help with brain function, and memory, including prevention of  Altzheimer's disease.

Have you had yours today?

This site lists the benefits, and also has some research results.

Here's an excerpt from it:

Fish Oil: According to the latest scientific research, the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil is very significant. Here you will find the latest fish oil news and omega-3 fish oil research. Using the links to the left you can browse our database, which currently contains research articles focusing on fish oil. Summarized below are some of the major benefits described by the articles contained herein.

The AHA says :

Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of — or who have — cardiovascular disease.

They also recommend eating an oily fish twice a week.     Salmon and tuna are classified as oily fish.    You can also take Omega 3 capsules, if you don't want to eat fish that often.

Just saw this blog in my list, and it reminded me of Fishy or Teresa.
Haven't heard or seen anything of her lately, and wondered if she
was still around.

Liked her articles on nutrition, etc.

Hi, Sonya,

Tuna in a can? Do you mean that pale brown flaky mush? I am convinced that what is in those cans is probably a cheap white fish like Coley (which, incidentally, is delicious) that has been pressure cooked to near destruction and then dyed and given an artificial flavour - although what that flavour is I have no idea!

Hi, Eric,

Given the opportunity to function properly, the human gut and digestive system can handle just about anything that is shoved through it. It is very well adapted to select only what is necessary and excrete what is not.

It is a great pity that the digestive system is not exercised like a lot of other parts of the human body so that it becomes better at what it does. The pasteurised, sterilised, tasteless garbage that is consumed today gives it no challenge and. like anything that is not used regularly, it tends to become less efficient.

I have been involved in many clinical trials of various health foods and food suppliments - the vast majority of them are surplus to requirements and simply pass through the gut - sometimes without any apparent change. This is because, regardless of all the rubbish being foisted upon us by food fascists, what we eat contains more than enough of what the body needs to sustain itself.

Agreed, some foods today may contain less of certain vitamin and mineral requirements but LESS does NOT mean INSUFFICIENT.

There is a whole industry that has been created around instilling fear or dread of food in the general population - but just think about this - human faeces is so full of undigested vitamins and minerals that a healthy dog can be sustained on it and an unhealthy dog become fit on it.

Isn't it about time that these food terrorists and all their pseudo religious preaching were brought to heel and made to tell the truth?

Truth? What am I saying?

They wouldn't acknowledge the truth, from a sales point of view - that would be slaughtering the goose that lays the golden eggs. Just like these bizz opp pushers, the truth can damage their wealth.

Hi All

Sure with you on the benefits of Omega 3s (fish oil) a couple of cautionary notes

1. you need to make sure the fish oil is molecular distilled to remove the heavy metal toxins now present in fish
(also means that you need to be careful not to eat too much fish itself, specially the game fish).

2. you need to avoid the Omega 6 oils - flaxseed etc - you don't need more of the 6s.

Good health and fortune - Eric

Sounds yummy, Sonya, especially the cream sauce. I love cream!
Should watch the carbs though, like you - the weight is climbing slowly,
sigh........ :-)

Ick, I hate salmon. But I do love tuna, as long as it is practically raw and not from a can. We had pan seared Tuna steaks last night, with broccoli, and everyone else had mashed potatos, except me, because I am watching my carbs again, so I had shiritake noodles with it instead.

I'm not sure if it helps though that I made a nice little pot of wasabi cream sauce to pour over it, but it sure did taste good

I have tried taking the fish oil capsules, but can't stand that nasty fish taste all day when I do. I will just stick to my liquid multivitamin that tastes like berries, thank you:)

Don't worry Arthur! I still eat far too much chocolate and carob

Hi, again, snakesmum,

Don't let the food fascists put you off what you enjoy eating.

I know a lot of people who have died.

I do not know a single dead person who could come back and honestly say that they lived any longer by following any advice by so-called experts.

Take fish oil capsules every day and you might live longer?

As your wake is progressing, the fish oil capsule salesman will be touting his wares around your coffin explaining how you would have been dead two years earlier if he hadn't saved you. (Yeah. Right. The ultimate endorsement - by a corpse!)

Think about this - if you gave up cream cakes (for example) you would probably suffer a craving for them. You might well say "I'm dying for a cream cake!"

That might be more true than you think.

Denying yourself something that gives you pleasure is creating an unhealthy emotion (craving) that could well shorten your life. I think that is true but, like the fish oil salesman, I can't prove it because I cannot say that you would have died in 2111 if you hadn't given up cream cakes and the craving hadn't killed you in 2110.

Hi OC,

You are right about eating a balanced diet. Unfortunately, I don't
like oily fish, so chose to go the capsules route. The only oily fish I
can tolerate is grilled salmon, and don't have that often enough
to make a difference.

Guess I should eat more veg, fish, and less cakes and other
rich food, but I do like my sweet things........

Hi Robin,

Age and diet doesn't always seem to be the answer to the high
cholesterol problem. In my case, I believe it's genetic, as
most of my family suffer, including the vegetarians!

Hi, snakesmum,

Oily fish is great, sardines and mackerel are my favourites - BUT I eat them for pleasure and flavour - not as a medicine.

Wouldn't it be sad if someone started eating mackerel to lower their cholesterol (which, incidentally, will only happen if you stop eating what was causing the high cholesterol in the first place) and they choked to death on a fish bone?

If you took every bit of food advice around, you would eat nothing - but everything eaten in moderation is good for you if it is a natural food.

I'm quite a glutton and over indulge in many foods that are on the various hit lists of so-called nutrition experts. It is because I eat a wide variety of foods that I do not suffer from the many plagues that are promised in epistles of doom.
