How To Speak With An Australian Accent

As an actor, many moons ago, I had to learn to speak with various different American accents for the plays in which I performed.

I learnt to speak Texan, Southern, General, Brooklyn and New York. Those of you from those areas would laugh at me if you heard. Especially "General" - now what exactly is that??!!

Now I have heard that apparently one of the hardest accents to master in the English language is the Australian accent. Pronounce "Australian" as "strine" and you are on your way.

Did you know that we dare to laugh even at the master (or mistress) of accents ... Meryl Streep, for her rendition of "a dingo took my baby" in the movie Evil Angels?  To us it sounds like a cross between New Zealand and who-knows-what.  She might have learnt Polish for "Sophie's Choice", but sorry, Aussie is beyond her.

The reason that our accent is so difficult to master is probably because we have possibly the most boring, flat accent ever

To any would be mimics, I have some advice.  To sound like an authentic Aussie, don't worry about all the vowel changes or any of that technical stuff.  All you need to do is talk with your mouth closed.  Honestly.

What, you don't believe me?  Okay, try this.  Close your mouth.  Now, open your lips the tiniest amount, and without moving them, try saying "Good day. How are you going."  Remind you of anything?

There.  Now you can impress your friends with your new found acting skills at the next party.

This is what I do ...

My daughter is very good at accents due to talking with people in conference rooms & skype. I think it is the slang terms of different places that can make you sound really stupid if you have no clue what they mean or how a statement is used in a certain area.

I've heard it said that the reason we talk with our mouths closed is to keep the flies out! Could be true ...

Love the Aussie accent!
I wish to have the talent of changing accents. My hubby is really good at imitating many accents.
The only accent I can do very well, is Southern. '

Shh..Jen..(no more hackers), don't tell them that I am from the south.

My mom accusing me of having a "Calfornia" accent now..lol.
I have no idea what that is..ha..ha.

Okay, Mate! Think I have it! Tight lips works pretty good!

HI Penny,

Used to get lots of laughs, even in serious movies, watching all those
foreign actors trying to master our accent.

It's not the easiest, and I've heard some pretty awful attempts. :-)

Well we understand you a lot better now thanks to the efforts of Steve Irwin (RIP). I had the chance to meet him when he visited Florida a few years back. He really was a nice guy and very down to earth, after watching his show for a while I began to understand what he was saying so I actually understood what he was saying when I met him (in a convenience store buying water for his crew) I ended up having to translate what he was saying for the clerk. We both had a good laugh behind it.

Forget Crocodile Dundee, RIP Crocodile Hunter!

Hi Penny:
That was funny:
I enjoy accents because they add spice to any language, adding more depth to our character.
Accents add mystery, humor , vision of foreign lands, romance. There is so much in accents.
Actors like you can use accents to make a performance unforgettable.
My mother tongue is Spanish.
I went to school in New York city during the 60's , a long time a ago.
When I arrived there my English was very poor and whenever I had to stand up to recite something in the classroom I made my classmates explode in laughter. It was hard at the beginning but later on I found that I became popular specially among the girls who loved the way talked.
Later I realized that everybody in New York has an accent even the natives depending iif they came from Long Island, Brooklyn, Harlem, The Bronx, New Jersey, mid town, upper or lower Manhattan.
I studied with Jews,Afro Americans, Hispanics, Italian,French and did not really know which accent should I pick up to really feel newyorkish.
So I decided my Spanglish accent was the way to go.
When I travel mostly inn the USA I try to guess where my the person sitting next to me in the plane comes from by its accent. Most of the time I hit it right and start a conversation to kill the flying time.
So I think that you are on the right track . Keep studying accents.
I intend to watch some Crocodile Dundy re runs to get tha Aussie accent.
Adios

Hector

I read that. Apparently they used to subtitle all our movies for the rest of the English speaking world. We get lots of American TV and all the movies, so we easily understand American accents. We grew up with them. I must say though, I had trouble understanding what was being said in Pulp Fiction because the lead characters were intentionally mumbling.

Spare a thought for deaf Aussies who have to lipread - it must be impossible.
This is what I do ...
