Save me from the cyber bully

Today I am feeling a little sad and disappointed.

I just got "cyber bullied" for the first time, and it has not been a pleasant experience.

Some of my on-line content was the target of unnecessary comments aimed at me rather than the subject, and I have been contacted by this same person with instructions on what I can or can't write, and what I can or can't do in what is supposed to be a public arena.

All because I innocently posted in a public place, not realising that this bully was using the area as a personal campaign office. I have inadvertently stepped on the wrong toes, and now I am going to have to suffer the consequences.

It is quite amazing how this has recalled memories I had long shut away. I was a shy child, and was victimised at school. However, I was very fortunate to be blessed with a very long fuse leading to a strong temper. The children at school finally pushed me too far, I exploded, and I was not bullied again. Be warned, my cyber bullying acquaintance!

But, all bravado aside, I am really very upset that this has happened. That sensitive child might have toughened over the years, but everyone has weaknesses. I feel like I need to tread carefully, that my on-line relationships and projects might be in jeopardy, that I have to be cautious in what I say for fear of provoking some sort of cyber vendetta against me.

My heart goes out to those people in all walks of life who get bullied on a daily basis. I had forgotten how vulnerable you can feel, how hopeless, how depressed when someone is trying to terrorise you. It is easy for people to tell you to stand up to them, or report them, but it can be dangerous and have long-term, dire consequences to do so.

So realistically, how should a person deal with bullying, not just on-line, but anywhere?

How could anyone be worried with a cyber body guard like Jeunelle? ... LOL

Thanks Fishie and Jeunelle for being so supportive.

If anyone is reading this who has the same thing happen, I think it is important to realise that while the internet is a place where bullies can anonymously thrive, it is also a never ending source of support from lovely, friendly, wonderful people who really do care about you.

Once again, thank you everyone!

aww Penny,
I am so sorry to hear that someone has done this to you. You are such a sweet person and have a beautiful way of writing and expressing yourself. I agree with all Jenny and Lisa have said and hope that you can just keep right on smiling. If nothing else, your winning smile will get to that bully even more than Jeunelle's machete (too funny) LOL

Monika and Wayne, thanks for dropping by! I agree with Jenny too.

Ike, thank you for your advice. It is a good way to look at it - as another challenge.

... and Lisa ... thank you for your lovely post. It is nice to know that I'm not the only one who gets emotional about these things. Thank you. Mind you, I can be very opinionated given the right circumstances ... lol. You know how it is when you get passionate about something! I guess most people just know how to express themselves without getting personal.

Having said that, it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps that is part of the problem.

If someone has never learned to express a difference of opinion except by attacking the other person, then that is the way they are going to behave. Perhaps this is where a lot of bullying initiates.

Hi Penny,
Dear Penny, It could not have happened to a nicer person.
I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you.

Believe you me, my bottom chin still quivers and my eyes fill with water when someone steps on my toes too harshly...lol. Just shows that we are good people, through and through, who really think alot about our own actions, so as not to do the same to someone else.

Kudos for keeping the other persons name private!!! That's always best in the public eye.

I totally agree with Alasy y Cia. She explained this type of situation very, very well.

I think sooner or later, it happens to each and everyone of us, no matter how hard we try to do everything right. Just be sure and not take it personal. I've only known you for a few days here on Apsense, and I already know what a terrific, intelligent, and beautiful person that you are!!!!!! Hang in there, in a few days or so, it won't bother you near as much.

Shy? I am the queen of that..lol. Made fun of? Sure, who has not? Be sure and don't let this incidence stop you from sharing your wonderful self with all of us here at Apsense!

P.S. I'm glad to hear that it did not happen on Apsense!

In the public you can hardly escape critical notice. It's part of the challenges of adventure.

Thank you so much, Jenny, for your wise and sensible advice. I agree that rising to the bait just encourages bad behaviour.
