Air Pollution - who is at greater risk??
by Janet Matthews Health and Nutrition Writer According to recent research it would appear that some people are more susceptible to health risks due to air pollution than others. Studies have found greater cardiovascular effects of particulate air pollution in women than in men- especially older women. Researchers believe that particulates are deposited differently and perhaps more harmfully in women's lungs compared with men's.In view of this fact, it would appear that air pollution needs to be taken more seriously as a risk factor not only for the health of adults but also that of the unborn fetus. New evidence shows that the harmful effects of exposure to high levels of ozone and carbon monoxide may be responsible for baby being born with congenital heart defects, especially if the mother is exposed to pollutants during the 2nd month of pregnancy when the fetal heart and other organs are just beginning to develop.
Clearly there is something in the air that can disrupt normal fetal development. Isn't it time we took responsibility and did something about it?
