5 Tips on How to Gain Visitors for Your Website and Retain Their Attention

by Danielle Dandridge

The goals of most webmasters are quite similar.  They are something akin to this, "Climb in SERP rank, gain traffic, convert visitors into customers/clients, keep them coming back!"  Here I've put together a list of five tips to help you do just that:

1)  FRESH CONTENT - Updating your website's content is important in many ways.  First, fresh content helps your site climb in SERP (search engine result page) rank because search bots will crawl it more often to see what has been added, and what is new that needs to be indexed.  This will, of course, bring you more traffic as your website gets closer to the top of the SERP.  Finally, your visitors are more likely to return if there's something new to see.

2)  BLOGS - Because they're so search engine friendly, blogs are indexed rather quickly.  Creating a reciprocal link between your website and your blog will increase your page rank, SERP rank, and contribute to your link building.  Blogs can also be viewed as fresh content that brings your visitors/customers/clients back to read your new entries.  Don't forget to include your website link in the signature of each entry.  Not only will this help with link popularity, but it's a great way to advertise without overtly advertising.  Besides, if they like what they read on your blog, they just might want to take a look at your website!

3)  FORUMS & GROUPS - Provide your visitors with forums &/or groups that are related to the subject of your website.  Forums, like blogs, are extremely SEO friendly, and they tend to get indexed quickly, as well.  If you'd like to host your own forum, try a free webmaster tools site like Bravenet to get your own free message forum.  When you interact with your visitors, be sure to include the link to your website in all of your signatures to build link popularity, and also to provide visitors with an easy way to check out your site if they want to.  Forums also serve as a means of fresh content.  If you don't want to host your own forum, consider giving your visitors a list of groups & forums that are related to your website.  It's even better if your recommend groups & forums that you or your company already belong to.

4)  BUSINESS & SOCIAL NETWORKS - Supply your visitors/customers/clients with a list of free online business & social networks (i.e. Solixta Better Business Network & Yuwie), preferably some that you or your company are already a member of.  The more you interact with your visitors, the more likely they are to become customers/clients.  Additionally, business networks can be a great way for your visitor to boost his/her OWN business.  Consider starting your own business network, incorperating your business/company name into your network title.  This helps to get your business'/company's name out, so people will recognize it, and it will help establish you as an expert in your field, which is always good!  For instance, the business network I started for my company, Paradigm Shift Website Solutions, is called Paradigm Shift Network.

5)  FREEBIES - Give your visitors gifts because they appreciate it.  They will be more likely to return, and recommend your website to others.  You can offer things like free consultations, free quotes, free daily horoscopes, free graphics, free advice, or anything else that pertains to your website/business/company.  When you change &/or update your freebies, it also counts as fresh content, which will place you higher in SERP rank, too.

I hope these have given you some helpful ideas for your own website.
