"We Do Not Believe Anyone's Personal Information Was Compromised."

"We do not believe anyone's personal information was compromised." Whenever one reads of a data security loss, these words or some similar statement is always included in the release. Your personal information is lost, how much more can one be comprimised? Your information is somewhere other than where it is supposed to be.

Recent data losses include:

Kartenhaus, a ticket sales office in Hamburg, lost 66,000 customers credit cards between October 24, 2006 and September 30, 2007. Their parent company is Ticketmaster.

October 4, 2007, The Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure announced plans to review its protocols after the agency mistakenly released Social Security numbers in September of about 450,000 licensed professionals.

TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. released in September 14, 2007 that contact information for 6.3 million customers was stolen since late May.

Should one truly trust the "we do not believe anyone's personal information was compromised"?
