Marketing by a reluctant salesperson

by Jean DAndrea Retired
Having tried and failed with many different MLM and other programs in the past, I think I'm uniquely qualified to make a few comments on how not to market!

Way back in the past, when I first started trying to be a successful affiliate, I joined a very well known program, which shall remain nameless.     It wasn't cheap, and as a rank amateur, I thought all I had to do was to join the program and put it in a few Traffic Exchange's and presto! I'd be rich.

As you all no doubt know, it doesn't work like that - it's not that easy.   Some months later, and many dollars poorer, the program and I parted company.     Typical of these things, admin gave no help at all when asked, all they wanted was that you pay your money, and advertise the program. Me, I'm unusual - I want more from admin than that.

Many more programs were tried over the next few months, and surprise, surprise, - no income was forthcoming.   The bank balance was down.   I was a failure!

During this time, I'd even joined a few HYIP programs to see if any cash would come my way with a small investment.   Needless to say, more went out than came in.    The internet is absolutely full of traps for the unwary and inexperienced.

I've learned a few things now:   Before you join a program, check it out.   This is called "Due diligence".   Do a "Whois" search on the domain - you'll be surprised how much information you can find.

These days, I'm a member of one program, which is the only one I actively promote.    It has made me a small profit, has an honest Admin, who is active in the member's forum, and is always available to help.   Other members are always friendly and helpful, and there is a great community atmosphere - I think I'll stay!

Hi snakesmum, I do agree with you tht MLM is not tht ez. In the past I have joined at least 8 MLM companies and also gave up all within a yr or 2 ,the most. But now..things have changed. I joined a company (which manufacture and distribute chinese herbs) as a Consumer and to my surprise I received a cheque on my very 1st mth. I did not sell any products. I only bought products for my personal intake and they send me a cheque. Isn't tht great? I have been only 26 mths with the company and my mthly cheque is at least AU1000. If you want to know more, do give me your email and I can explain further.

Hi MushroomLady,

It's great that you've found something that works so well for you!

At the moment I'm concentrating on one business only - there is a school of thought that you should only have one business, as advertising more than one dilutes your promotional effort.

I can see the sense in that, so for the moment, I'm sticking with it.

Do you do a lot of promotion of your website? Or do you use TE's and safelists at all? Am always interested in what is working for others.

TE's have given me some sales in the past, so I still use them sometimes. Branding yourself is a key, isn't it?

Hi snakesmum. M glad you too have found something which works for you. :) I am very very NEW to internet marketing and am still trying to really understand how it works even though it sound simple.
No idea what is TE or safelists. Would be great if you could tell me more.
I understand tht we could lease out space in our site n be paid. But not sure how to go about it.

Hi MushroomLady,

TE's are Traffic Exchanges, or Surfing programs, where you view other people's websites to earn credits, and they visit yours.
Safelists are groups you join, and agree to receive emails from other members, sometimes for credits, and in return, you get to send your emails to the list every few days. The frequency depends on your upgrade level, and the list. They are a safe way to market by email without being accused of spam.

I'm not sure how you rent out your ad space, but I think there's probably an
explanation in World of Apsense.

Hope this helps

You write bery bery well LOL

We have all gotten at some point in time and we wonder how it happens No once but more than once.

I too (wink) have found the perfect program and refuse to dilute my efforts by promoting more than one.

Thanks Wendy!

I do have some other programs on another website, but it's
not advertised, so they are sort of just passive links. All my
promotional efforts are aimed in one direction only. :-)

I have been taught the same thing.
You can’t ride more than one horse at a time.
But I have seen many companies shut down by bad press and even over zealous attorney generals.
One company I joined was based in Tulsa Ok and when they had their open house the Ok attorney generals officers met us at the door and said they were shut down.
The company won their case in court but the damage done to them was too great.
Nutritional companies have to be very careful.
If a product works too good, it can be shut down.
It’s against the law in the US for a food to cure any illness.
(We could have a long discussion about that!)

My point is that it is always good to have a backup plan.
I now believe more in “multiple streams of income” than I used to.
It might not be easy but I have seen people ride more than one horse at a time.
