How To Make Money Buying Abandoned Self-Storage Units
by Jill DavidsonAnyone who loves flea markets, auctions, or yard sales should consider creating a profitable home-based business by buying abandoned self-storage units. Thousands of units each year are abandoned, foreclosed upon by the storage company, and sold at a public auction.
You never know what kind of treasures are going to be hidden inside! You can find almost anything: furniture, housewares, kitchenware, books, toys, seasonal decorations, bicycles, barbecue grills, clothing, collectibles and antiques, sporting goods, the list goes on...
The auctions aren't hard to find; just get out the yellow pages and call all the self-storage companies in your area and ask if they hold auctions. Some hold them monthly, some only two or three times a year, some just whenever they have enough abandoned units to make it worth their while. If they don't have any scheduled, they will usually put you on their list and notify you when the auctions are held.
When you win an auction on a unit, the contents become your property to dispose of as you wish. This is a great way to get lots of great inventory for ebay, flea markets, and yard sales. We've also kept a lot of nice furniture, housewares, kitchenware, sporting goods, and tools for our own home. The last two summers we have had new grandchildren added to the family, and we were able to supply almost everything the mommies needed for their new babies. Buying abandoned units can not only make you money, they can save you money by not having to go out and pay high prices for new products.
Knowing how much to bid is the tricky part! Usually, when you bid on a unit, you are only allowed to stand at the open door and look inside. You don't get to walk inside to rummage through boxes or see what is behind that huge cabinet sitting right in front. There may be lots of boxes and bags, and who knows what might be in those! You don't want to bid so high that you lose your profit potential.
My book, How To Make Money Buying Abandoned Self-Storage Units, describes how to size up a unit and bid with profit in mind. Other sections describe what to look for, what to avoid, and the most profitable methods of selling the different types of goods inside. Take advantage of my own experience, and take the shortcut to building this fun and profitable home-based business for yourself when you read all my success secrets!
