Menopause Made Easy

by Shelley Rowan
Did your mother tell you what to expect ? Mine did, to the extent of hot flashes and mood swings. Of course, I knew that part, having witnessed it first hand. But I discovered a whole list of symptoms that nobody mentioned. I knew something was odd when the dizzy spells started but didn’t know what until I began surfing the internet, trying to come up with a reason. And to stop the irrational thought of a brain tumor. Well, guess what! Dizziness is a fairly common symptom of menopause, which was somewhat of a relief, and even better, I found out that it could be subdued by drinking sage tea. The stuff didn’t taste good but two cups of sage tea a couple of times a week, and no more dizziness. Well, I’ve never been a great believer is doctors or prescription drugs but I figured better get a professional opinion and take it from there. At least I would have some idea of how to treat myself. Since I hadn’t been to a doctor in about 10 years, I found a gynecologist who was new to the area and didn’t as yet have a huge caseload. She did the pap smear, the exam, drew the blood—all the prerequisites need prior to determining a course of action. And what was the answer? Hormone Replacement Therapy! I wouldn’t have agreed to that in the best of circumstance but this took place in July 2002, at the same time that the study regarding the negative side hormone replacement therapy. This treatment had been the standard therapy in the United States for treating menopausal symptoms. Not only did hormone replacement therapy relieve such discomforts as hot flashes and vaginal dryness, it also seemed to protect against several postmenopausal conditions, such as osteoporosis and heart disease.

Coincidentally, in July 2002, the Women's Health Initiative reported that hormone replacement therapy actually posed more health risks than benefits for women in the clinical trial. And as the number of health hazards attributed to hormone replacement therapy grew, doctors discontinued routine prescriptions for this popular treatment. Researchers found an increased risk of:

§ Heart disease

§ Breast cancer

§ Stroke

§ Blood clots

§ Dementia

Additionally, it was found that women taking combination estrogen-progestin experienced an increase in mammography abnormalities. The increased number of false-positives (signs of possible breast cancer that prove to be inaccurate) was attributed to the increased breast tissue density that estrogen induces. Women on combination therapy should be aware that they may require more frequent mammograms and additional testing as a result of this therapy. I can scare myself, thank you, and don’t require inaccurate test results.

Not only was that a red flag, it turns out that hormone replacement therapy did not improve a number of symptoms, such as sleep, emotional health, general health, physical functioning and sexual satisfaction.

“So let me get this straight”, I say to my doctor, “you want me to take something that may or not make me feel better, may cause cancer, may suggest cancer that doesn’t really exist. I’ll pass, thanks.” She wasn’t pleased but it’s my body, and I believe that your doctor is your employee. Since there was no discussion of alternative treatment, I haven’t seen her since.

Here’s the best thing. I learned that there are so many more menopausal issues than I had realized, and that some people are affected by all, some by very few, and to varying degrees. Upon researching the subject, I discovered that there are lots of products out there, some good and some not so good. I reasoned that I was not the only person who was looking for something natural. Fortunately, in my search, I stumbled upon Changes for Women. I can’t say enough about the mindset and the products of this company. I’m leaving the menopausal years behind, and I am so grateful to have “sailed through” with such ease. I owe a great deal to Changes for Women.
