Red Flags Are you an identity theft victim?

by Cheryl Baumgartner Medical Billing/Coding/Insurance

What are the warning signs that you may be an identity theft
victim?  Well it may be different for
different people.  As an adult receiving
pre-approved credit card offers is the norm, but it’s NOT normal for a 5 year
old to be getting them.  That five year
old could be a victim.  The following is
a list of some common indicators.  Apply
a little logic to them and they can be good indicators.
Collection calls and
letters
Bills from companies you do not do business
with
Auto insurance rate
hikes
Driver’s license
suspended or revoked
Turned down for loans
or mortgages
Social security
benefits terminated
Dropped by health
insurance or unable to qualify for health insurance
Receiving merchandise
and goods you did not order
You cannot get a
driver’s license due to one already being issued to you
A doctor talks to you
about conditions you do not have and wants to know if you have had
complications from that condition
Police serve a
warrant on you for criminal activity
You are turned down
for employment or housing
IRS asks you to explain
why you did not report income you never made
Your purse or wallet
is lost or stolen
You receive a letter
from a company you have done business with informing you of a security breach
While experiencing these situations is not a guarantee your
identity has been stolen, they are very good warning signs that you need to do
some investigating.  Being aware of these
signs is a good start toward finding out. Nor is this a complete list. There are as many ways to steal and use an ID as there are ID thieves.
