10 years later...

My mother and my grandparents could tell you exactly where they were when Pearl Harbor was bombed.  They could tell you exactly where they were when JFK was assassinated.  And if you were to ask any American, and some that are not American, where they were 10 years ago today they can tell you.

Today is the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.  It was been 10 years since millions around the world watched the world trade center collapse.  I’m not going to get into the debate over who is responsible or why they fell I am instead going to talk about how we have reacted.  9/11 stirred up anti-Muslim feelings that persist even today.

Probably because for the past 10 years we have constantly been feed the line that Terrorists come from the Middle East.  There are those who will insist that all terrorists are ‘towel headed A-rabs’.  Not true.  Every Muslim is a jihadist. Not true.

The American public is so busy worrying about Muslims and Arabs that we have formed this view that only they can be terrorists and they are just waiting under every rock to attack us again.  We live our lives constantly being reminded about 9/11 and acting like we will be attacked every day.  This would make sense if we lived in Israel or Palestine.  Terrorism is a true daily threat in some places but not here.

The sad fact is that we are so worried about al Queda, we have forgotten that we have more to worry about from a terrorist that was born and bread in the U.S.   There are no less than 15 Domestic Terrorist organizations identified by the FBI and we are worried about al Queda.  There are some names we can recognize like Timothy McVeigh (Born Buffalo, NY) who was responsible for the Oklahoma City bombing which killed 164 people and injured over 600 others 19 of the dead where children and 400 of the injured were children.

How about Eric Robert Rudolph (Born Merritt Island FL) who was responsible for killing one person and injuring 111 others when he bombed the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.  And I’ll bet hardly anyone has heard of Joe Stack.  Joe Stack took suicide bombing to a new for the Domestic Terrorist by flying his single engine plane into the IRS Austin Texas office killing himself and one person and injuring 13. Oh and Mr Stack managed to do this in the year 2010 when the government was so successfully protecting us from Terrorism.  Perhaps they would have succeeded if the guy’s name had been Joe Mohammed.

We Americans have more to fear from the Domestic Terrorist than al Queda.  These three men were all born in the U.S. McVeigh was even a veteran of the Armed Forces.  It did not stop any of them from committing attacks against Americans on American soil.  Every one of those mentioned set out with the deliberate goal of killing other Americans.  Domestic Terrorism committed by Americans against other Americans has been going on since America became its own nation.  Domestic Terror groups are operating right here on American soil today yet nothing is ever said about them.  You don’t see warnings being issued about them.  Maybe they should add the word “Muslim” in their name somewhere and there would be resources put into finding and wiping them out instead of fear mongering about ‘potential’ attacks coming from al Queda.

We have our own version of al Queda right here, the Domestic terrorist, and we don’t have to go half a world away to find them.

10 years later, people are STILL dying in Iraq and Afghanistan as a direct result of the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Yes they are because we still insist on thinking that everyone in every Muslim country is a terrorist. We have more to worry about from someone born and bred on American soil attacking us domestically to make a political point than we have to worry about people in Afghanistan.
