10 Vagina Hygiene Rules

by Priya Sharma For Your Medical Assistance

Maintaining the hygiene of your genitalia is important for your well-being both physically and mentally. Keeping your vagina clean would enable you to prevent common as well as serious diseases that might affect it. Among the common infections, vaginal yeast infection and bacterial vaginosis rank the highest in terms of occurrence, while more serious and life threatening diseases can happen if not proper hygiene rules are adhered to.

Given below is a list of ten things that you can do and adapt it to your lifestyle, which would also prevent your vagina from suffering from any kind of infection:

1) Your vagina maintains an acidic environment (with a pH level between 3 and 5) that prevents the growth of harmful microbes within it. So, when washing, use a hypoallergenic soap on the outside and only warm water on the inside of your vagina. This is because soaps are usually alkaline as per as their pH levels go, and applying it inside the vagina would imbalance the acidic environment inside your vagina. Besides, warm water is a great way to check the growth of harmful microorganisms as well.

2) Always wipe from the front to the back, because wiping in any other way would help in the easy transmission of bacteria. Also, ensure that you are gentle while wiping the area since the skin around your genitals tends to be soft and sensitive. Use a dry, clean piece of cloth to wipe your vagina dry.

3) When it comes to sex or sexual contact, it is advised that you should clean your vagina both before and after sex. Another great advisable tip would be to ensure that your partner has clean genitals too, before intercourse. Also, ensure that fingers are clean before any kind of digital penetration is performed.

4) Staying dry is the best preventive measure against yeast infestation. This entails changing out of wet clothing items, such as bathing suits and sweaty workout attire as soon as possible. Make it a point as well to wash your sweaty pieces of clothing after each and every use.

5) Consuming probiotic foods such as yogurt, kefir, unpasteurized sauerkraut, and pickles kept and fermented in salt and water have shown to ward off infections significantly, besides being generally healthy for your whole body.

6) Choosing the appropriate kind of fabric for your panties is a very important way to maintain hygiene. Gynecologists the world over recommend the use of all-cotton underwear that has not been subjected to any kind of bleaching process, because fabrics like silk and lace tend to prevent air from circulating in your genital area and are good at retaining bacteria: signs which enable bad bacteria to grow and thrive.

7) Fluid discharges from the vagina are a pretty common thing, notwithstanding the subtle differences that exist from one individual to the next. Clear to yellow colored discharges are a part of routine physiological discharges, but when the color changes to green and it is accompanied by pelvic pain and a foul odor that resembles of rotting fish, consult your doctor without further delay.

8) If you are using baby wipes to wipe your intimate area, then they are completely fine as long as they are hypo-allergic and don’t have any trace of added scent.

9) If you feel that you are usually prone to yeast infection, separate your underwear from the rest of your laundry and wash them in hot water, as it would kill off yeast and other kinds of micro-organisms.

10) Lastly, you need not worry too much about your vagina’s well being. Many women end up using products that actually harm their genitalia more than helping it. If you follow all these tips to the letter, chances are that your vagina would be clean and happy.
