Why it is important to have a school website?

by Henry Desouza Manager

The purpose of creating a school website is evident from the contents thrown in it. Unlike business websites that are more goal-oriented and marketing-driven for the owners who make investment for future returns, a school’s web presence is more about a new-age approach to dish out information regarding the history of the school, admission details and schedules, study materials, exam routines etc.

Some schools stick to ‘print-on-paper’ notifications while others are making a shift towards having websites to facilitate better interactivity with students and their parents. Such a change from tradition to trend is also a mirror to how the academic institutions are streamlining and professionalising the overall school management process.

Due to differences in objectives, designing a school website is all-together a different game. One must have a wealth of knowledge and skill to design institutional websites. And, experience is always enriching excellence. Look does not take a centre stage here, and focus should be converged to integration of easy-to-navigate features. Simply look is preferred for academic websites. Font size and colour should be such that no one faces difficulty while going through the information. A designer must keep in mind all these essential factors while crafting websites for schools.

Let’s now put the importance of school website designing in a more constructive way:

Better Communication: A school website is an advanced interactive tool. Everyone is after name and schools are no exception. The schools use their websites to publicise annual events, rich background, vision, accomplishments and ambitions. In addition, schools also publish their annual updates, policy changes, guardian meeting schedules, admission dates and timing etc. on their websites.

More Authenticity: A school gains more credibility if it has a website. According to a survey conducted in 2010, more than 36% of the schools reported about receiving half of the feedbacks and enquires from parents via websites. The number is rightly believed to have increased considerably since the survey was carried out.

Technical Marketing: Though schools are not like business organisations, still they too want to be first among the contemporaries. This sort of challenge obliges them to make the right move which is an effective marketing approach but lacks in business-oriented aggressive tone. A school website gives them a better platform to channel their marketing efforts. Today’s parents are Internet savvy, and they always resort to online search to find out the best schools for their children.

Designing websites for academic institutions is not so easy as icing a cake; so only the master of the game should be approached to ensure a WINNING factor.
