What Sustainable Agriculture Courses can Bring to Aquaculture

by Mile Anderson Online Tutor

The development for sustainable ways and means of production is of utmost importance to the field of agriculture. The reason for this is quite obvious; agriculture is the main source of food production for the economy for continued growth and existence. That is why it is vital to educate the current and future generation on the importance of sustainable development. The study of agriculture teaches the people about the best practices of farming and procedures that can be done so that sustainable development can be achieved and maintained. Its aim is to produce better quality and quantity of crops and livestock. Let’s take fish farming or aquaculture as an example.

Aquaculture, or what is also known as aqua farming or fish farming, pertains to the cultivation of either fresh or saltwater aquatic organisms under controlled conditions. They can be placed within human-made water reservoirs and tanks, or grown in their natural environment (rivers, lakes, or sea) using enclosures such as fish pens and nets. Its importance most especially to farm and fisher folks can never be stressed enough since fish production caters not only as a means for human nutrition, but also helps in poverty alleviation in various rural areas. That may be the foremost reason why agriculture courses need to be pushed further into the minds of the younger and future generation; making them realise its importance, as well as the need for its continued development. Great effort has been made to make the fish production process more productive, efficient, cost-effective and environmental friendly.

It is also important to take note of the various challenges being faced by aqua-farmers. One of them is to control environmental pollution brought about by accumulation of fish faeces within a single area. When faeces decay, it produces ammonia, methane and hydrogen sulphide. These are toxic to marine life when in large concentrations. Faeces also promote the substantial growth of algal blooms, which in turn may reduce oxygen content in the surrounding area. Great care must be put in place so that future problems may be easily addressed. Fish meat has an excellent nutritional value because of its high omega-3 fatty acid content. This makes it a very marketable commodity especially among those who are looking for healthy alternative sources to red meat. For more information on how to achieve sustainable development in aquaculture, there are lots of resources available for agriculture courses online.
