Treatment Of Diabetes

by Nidhi Paswan Health Advisor

Diabetes refers to a group of diseases that affect how the body uses blood glucose commonly called blood sugar. If the person has diabetes, it means that he has too much glucose in the blood although the reason may differ. There are two types of diabetes

Symptoms of diabetes-

Symptoms of diabetes may vary depending on how high the blood sugar is elevated. Those with pre diabetes or type 2 diabetes may not experience any symptoms in the initial stage. Whereas in type 1, symptoms tend to appear quickly and be more sever. Some of the signs and symptoms of both the types of diabetes may include:

Increased thirst

Frequent urination

Extreme hunger

Unexplained weight loss

Presence of ketones in the urine

Fatigue

Blurred vision

Slow-healing sores

Mild high blood pressure

Frequent infections, such as gum or skin infections and vaginal or bladder infections

Type 1 diabetes can develop typically appears during childhood or adolescence however type 2 diabetes can develop at any age and is often preventable.

Causes of diabetes-

The cause of diabetes can be understood after understanding how glucose is normally processed in the body.

How glucose normally works

Glucose is the main source of energy in the body that makes up the muscles. It comes from two major sources, the food we eat and the liver. During digestion sugar is absorbed into the blood. Sugar then enters the cells with the help of insulin

As the insulin circulates, it acts like a key unlocking the doors to allow sugar into the cells. Insulin helps in lowering the amount of sugar in the blood. As the sugar levels in the blood drops, so does the secretion of insulin from the pancreas.

Causes of type 1 diabetes

In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This leaves the body with little or no insulin. Instead of being transported into the cells, sugar builds up in the bloodstream. Type 1 is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors, though exactly what those factors are is still unclear.

Causes of pre diabetes and type 2 diabetes

In type 2 diabetes the cells become resistant to the action of insulin, and the pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to overcome this resistance. Instead of moving into the cells, sugar builds up in the bloodstream. The reason behind this is uncertain, although as in type 1 diabetes, it's believed that genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of type 2. The development of type 2 diabetes is linked to being over weight, but not everyone with type 2 is overweight.

Causes of gestational diabetes

At the time of pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones to sustain pregnancy. These hormones make the cells more resistant to insulin. As the placenta grows larger in the second and third trimesters, it secretes more of these hormones which make it even harder for insulin to do its job.
