Tips for Creating Mobile Apps That People Actually Use

by Jeff M. Writer

The growth in number of smart phones sold and activated is exploding worldwide. Small businesses are no longer simply setting up a blog and going to sleep; they’re actively seeking to stay close to their prospects and clients via mobile apps – apps that won’t gather dust on the app stores but that people will actually use.

Nielsen reported that smart phone users older than 18 have downloaded 42 applications on their phones, but they only use 10 or fewer of those 42 each. A smaller percentage use between one and four apps daily. Therefore, some companies are winning the app game while others are living in the dead app zone.

What makes these apps winners and others losers?

  1. Design Traits. Good apps use interfaces that are discreet, modern and clean. They modeled their design after the original iOS software. The top 15 all base the design on iOS operating system. However, you can’t have a pretty design without proper function. Your app must look good and work well too.
  2. Readability. You would think that because we live in a tech-savvy world, people wouldn’t care about whether they could read something. The contrary is the truth. People want to be able to read the print easily. If your app isn’t easily read, you will not be one of the leaders for applications developed. Unfortunately for programmers is the number of possibilities. You can get any size screen or phone you want. Programmers have to be ready for that. You need to balance easy-to-read with ease of use. If you have both, like the Guardian app does for its news site, you will be on top.
  3. Continued Updates. After you develop your app, you want to keep improving it as people are using it and giving you feedback. Therefore, although you aren’t on the list in one month, the next month, you just might make the cut. It’s similar to college football where one loss can drop you off the top 25 or one big win can catapult you on the list.
  4. Phone Features. People buy smart phones for the cool technical advances already embedded within the operating system. Why would you want to reinvent the phone? Just use the phone’s existing features to make your app work. This will ensure your app is on the top list of applications.

What do people want?

According to Magora mobile app developers, when people download applications to their phones, they expect the apps to have these characteristics:

  1. Connectivity. You want your application to be online without effort. The faster people can get the information they seek, they more likely they will use your app. An app for a catalogue of law offices for instance, needs to be easy to connect and search. It needs to display results fast and list all necessary information like office name, address, area of expertise, etc. without loading for several seconds. Users really don’t have time to waste. Connectivity is the most important trait your app can have.
  2. Convenience. You want to appeal to the user’s emotions. You want to keep it simple, allowing someone to tap your app with one hand. To be on the top of the list, you have to ensure that your app can work in changing environmental light and noise, with unsteady movement of the device or any other issue that might occur. You want a joyful experience in the flow of content. Good content also is important (see above).
  3. Location. If you can add a map to your application’s programming, you will be ahead of the game. People want to know where something is located.
  4. Availability. Good apps are available any hour or in any location.
  5. Security. You want to ensure the data transmitted is safe from hackers, but you also want to ensure the phone, tablet or connected computer are not harmed because of the synchronization process. Therefore, your app must be secure.
  6. Personalization. If you want to attract people to your application, you should add a feature that allows people to put their personal stamp on it.

If you follow these tips, you have a better chance that apps you create will have the top spot on the list of great applications in no time.
