by Harsha Sujay Business Consultant

Solar cell phone chargers utilize solar panels to charge smart phone batteries. They are a substitute to conventional electric cell phone chargers and in some circumstances can be used with a normal electrical outlet.

Types of Solar Chargers

There are many type of solar chargers are available in market. Car chargers working with solar energy are a popular and practical choice of encouraging unconventional source of energy. There are also public solar chargers for portable phones which can be fitted permanently in public places such as lanes, park and squares. The device, which according to European Union Commission declared as the first in the world is the Solar Strawberry Tree, public solar charger designed by Strawberry energy Company. This solar charger won the first place at "EU Viable energy week (EUVEW) 2011" in the Consumer category.

Some models have built in solar charger and are commercially accessible for GSM cellphone models. Solar car chargers for smartphones come in many shapes and configurations comprising folding and rotating types.

Limitation of Solar Chargers

These chargers also come in the system of straps, with solar cells on the external surface and a nickel metallic hydride battery within. Current solar cell technology handicaps the effectiveness and sensibleness of phone chargers for everyday use. Phone charging times vary based on the battery capacity installed that continues to increase, further lengthening the charge times of solar chargers. The foldable design has proven to be helpful for higher charge current while sustaining a compact size. Current designs are capable of charging a new smartphone in 3 hours.

Use of Solar Energy for Other Mobile Accessories

Solar chargers are also offered for other cell phone equipment, such as Bluetooth headsets and speaker headphones. As the time goes by, solar energy is emerging as a viable source of energy. Other than chargers, it can also be used for smart watches and other wearable. But, using it for a conventional wall charger is still far off.

Conclusion

Use of renewable sources of energy is the only way ahead as this kind of energy doesn’t affect the environment adversely. Although, still a great distance from its true potential, solar chargers can be a big success in future, especially in the places, where there is ample sunlight throughout the year. As Apple has already shown by fulfilling 60 per cent of its energy requirement from the solar energy.
