Depression in women is a common problem in the modern times. It can greatly hamper the quality of life and have adverse effects on relationships, career and confidence in oneself. To know more about its symptoms, causes and treatment, read the article.

Depression in women is regarded as a serious condition that can adversely influence every aspect of their life. It can have considerable impact on relationships, career, social life and sense of self-effectiveness. Women are almost twice as probable as men to become victims of depression. In fact, it has been proven from detailed studies that one in every eight women is bound to suffer from this problem at some point in her life.

There are many signs that are exhibited by a woman suffering from depression. The most common complaints are:

  • Low spirits
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Lack of interest in activities that were previously enjoyed by the person
  • Loss of appetite or overeating
  • Heightened feelings of hopelessness, guilt and worthlessness
  • Repetitive thoughts of suicide or desire to self-harm
  • Lack of concentration
  • Low energy and acute fatigue

There are several theories which try to justify the high occurrence of depression among women. According to them, a number of causes have been cited, including social, biological and psychological factors.

  • Premenstrual Issues - Hormonal fluctuations occurring during menstrual cycle that cause bloating, irritability, emotional trauma and fatigue.
  • Perimenopause and Menopause - Fluctuation of reproductive hormones during perimenopause, the cycle which leads to menopause.
  • Conception Problems - Hormonal changes occurring at the time of pregnancy or issues associated with conception like unwanted pregnancy, miscarriage and infertility.
  • Health Disorders - Chronic illness, disability, injury, sudden resolutions for quitting addictions, or crash dieting.
  • Rumination - Crying, over thinking about the problem, and attempts for figuring out the root cause.
  • Stress - Overwhelming amount of stress at school, work or home.
  • Issues at Home and Work - Problems faced in balancing the fluctuating pressures of marital life and career.
  • Money Issues - Persisting financial problems.

Sometimes the cause can also be entirely medical, as observed in women with thyroid problems. Hypothyroidism is thus always eliminated from consideration by a physician or psychologist in Bondi Junction when treating a depressed woman.

The primary treatment approaches for women afflicted with depression are antidepressant therapy and psychotherapy. Besides that, there are other special methods of treatment.

Discussing and sharing the problems with trusted people such as spouse, family members and friends can help a lot to get through the tough time. Regular activities should not be discontinued or abstained from. Simple exercises such as walking, meditation or yoga improve energy levels and reduce fatigue. Minimum eight hours of undisturbed sleep is also highly beneficial.
