Craigslist Dangers: Dangers of Selling on Craigslist
by Moonlight Wealth Seo ExpertEvery day more people are looking to the internet as a new
source for income. Projections state that 3 billion new users will be online in
the next two years.
For many years one of those resources has been Craigslist.
Craigslist is a classified advertisements website with
sections devoted to jobs, housing, personals, for sale, items wanted, services,
community, gigs, résumés, and discussion forums.
Craig Newmark began the service in 1995 as an email
distribution list to friends, featuring local events in the San Francisco Bay
Area. It became a web-based service in 1996 and expanded into other classified
categories. It started expanding to other U.S. cities in 2000, and now covers
50 countries.
Craigslist Incidences:
Below are some accounts of the dangers that can be involved
with using Craigslist:
The 28-year-old was shot and killed Sept. 12 while meeting a
potential buyer in a parking lot of an apartment complex, allegedly by a
16-year-old girl who, along with her boyfriend, sought to steal the video
gaming system.
Crimes linked to Craigslist are still making headlines. New
Haven native Felix Dejesus was robbed and shot to death after trying to sell an
electronic tablet. Police said Dejesus arranged a meet up through Craigslist In
May of 2013.
Sellers who have posted contact information on their
Craigslist ads have occasionally been victims of robbery and murder. In his
article for MSNBC, Herb Weisbaum reported that an Edgewood, WA man was murdered
after a woman responded to his ad listing a ring for $2,760. She arrived with
three partners, who robbed the residence and killed the ad's poster. Weisbaum
quoted Michael Kaiser of the National Cyber Security Alliance as saying that
criminals have become very skilled in culling personal information from
Craigslist, using it to virtually case a residence and determine if the
property is worth robbing.
The fiancé of a man murdered for his cellphone says he
wondered if the man who planned to buy it was setting him up for a robbery.
Clayton County police say 18-year-old Terrance Dent shot and
killed 25-year-old Jevon Freeman in a church parking lot on Highway 85 near
Riverdale Wednesday. Officers say Freeman met Dent to sell him an iPhone
Freeman had advertised on Craigslist.
Another man, trying to sell some fancy sneakers met his
potential buyer at a Dunkin’ Donuts, Tuesday night. The potential buyer pulled
a gun on him. Police arrested Moses Hurley, 18, and a juvenile is connection
with the Dunkin’ Donuts robbery. Police do not believe they are responsible for
Playstation robberies and stabbing.
Safety First:
Never list your home address, phone number or any other
personal information in your Craigslist ad, and create a dedicated email
account that you'll use solely for Craigslist transactions. When selling a
small item, arrange to meet the prospective buyer at a public place. If you're
selling a large object that's impractical to move, have other people with you
during your appointment with a prospective buyer. Never arrange for a meeting
at night and never allow the person to enter your house, particularly if you're
alone.
