by Gavin Cole Writer

Working in an office all day can get boring at times. You sit at your desk all day, make reports, go out and have lunch and then make some more reports. However there are some things, which may temporarily relieve you from the mental burden you are carrying. What might that be? You wouldn't believe how these little things can make a huge difference.

1. Coffee

You are feeling tired and sleepy?

This caffeinated drink will give you the strength you need in no time. Coffee also makes you perform better. Research studies show that this stimulating beverage blocks the adenosine receptors in your brain so that neurotransmitters like dopamine and epinephrine enhance your alertness. Ask any night-shift worker - they know best.

Experiencing pain when working at a desk? Caffeine is known for easing pain in your neck, shoulders, forearms and wrists.

Coffee breaks increase motivation and productivity. Smokers enjoy these pauses to satisfy their additional needs too. You can also get along with your colleagues while taking some time off.

Your office should provide multiple choices of coffee brands for every employee's taste. Mind that some people like decaffeinated coffee.

2. Healthy Snacks and Fruits

Almonds

It has been 40 minutes since you started work and your belly began rumbling again? Yes, the vending machine can be a solution, but there is a better and healthier way to sate your hunger. Just bring some low-calorie snacks with you next time. Here are some examples of invigorating meals:

Almonds are a good source of vitamin E, calcium, phosphorous, iron and magnesium. These nutritients are good for the health state of your brain, bones and immunity system. And last but not least, almonds are great energy boosters. Other honourable mentions include walnuts and hazelnuts.

Low Fat Pop-Corn is a salty and crunchy alternative, rich on fibre.

Cereal/Oatmeal - easy to store, prepare and one of the best glucose providers.

Fresh fruits - the source of vitamins and minerals, as well as giving you a feeling of refreshment. Sweet or sour, they are a must when it comes to better performance at work and fortifying your organism’s defences. Dry fruits have the same benefits as the above. They are also a quick and easy way to acquire the strength you need to survive a busy day.

Candy bars - careful with those, the overwhelming desire is inevitable. Carefully select low-calorie products and consume with measure.

3. Pictures

Having a photo of a family member or a friend nearby gives you the feeling of moral support. Bringing back a good memory at a tough time can reverse the effects of stress and motivate you to gather strength and surpass all obstacles. Place a picture of a mountain, river or any natural beauty you prefer to give you a pleasant atmosphere. You can put some inspiring poster on the wall too. Use your imagination when you decorate your office.

4. Music

Musical note

The type of music you listen to is mostly defined by the mood you find yourself in. Classical, pop, rap or rock, pick melodic songs with inspiring lyrics for background while you work. Listening to an entertaining show on the radio will surely contribute to a positive state of mind. Most companies allow listening to music.

Here's a research that focuses on how music affects workplace performance made by Dr. Teresa Lesiuk.

5. Clean-Up

Brooms

Is your entire desk full of papers and documents dispersed in all directions ? Cleaning your workspace will undoubtedly give you a sense of achievement. We all know how hard it is not to give up when you see that diabolic mess. After cleaning your desk try to arrange everything in order to give you comfort. Put a plant or two. Studies show various plant have de-stressing effects and are an overall morale booster.

6. Beautiful Location

Does your office have a lovely view? Where is the location of your office? Near a park or at the centre of the city? Destination does matter when it comes to work environment. Having the chance to open the window and savour the fresh air, beautiful nature and birds’ singing may greatly lift your spirits. On the other hand irritating noises from cars or people shouting on the streets may distract you from your duties.

Consider an office relocation to a more quiet place, where you have direct sunlight into the room and surrounding trees outside your window. If you have already decided to move your work place you can always call office removal services to help you carry your accessories. Every company should give its employees the chance to feel comfortable.

7. Recreation Room

Most office buildings have a place where everyone can go and chill out. In the UK they are commonly referred as “game rooms”. Take a rest, watch TV, play a game, get a coffee, chat with colleagues or anything which can clear your mind for awhile. You need to periodically “reset” your brain to keep it function properly.

Every Rec room must have game tables like foosball, pool or air hockey. Table tennis and darts are another good option. After beating your opponents you will need a place to rest like an armchair. A coffee machine makes an excellent addition to the picture.

8. Go for a Walk

You are sitting on a chair all day, you need a little movement. Schedule a break to take a stroll around the building and exercise some yoga poses. This way you will refresh your mind and relieve muscle tension. Who knows, you might get an awesome idea by simply walking away from the office and taking some time alone.

9. Aid a Colleague

In a fast developing company there are always new things to learn like strategies, techniques and all kinds of information. You can always help newcomers with their tasks, teach them what you know, make them feel comfortable, guide them in any way you can. Trust me on this, they will not forget the favour you did them. As for you, the feeling that you helped someone achieve something is incredible.

It’s never too late to figure out how to deal with monotonousness and stressful situations at your office. You can try these few simple methods to keep a positive attitude and a better performance. Just remember small things also have an impact.
