Solar Outdoor Lighting: The Correct Lighting For Beautification And Saving Money

by Michael Boone
The addition of solar outdoor lighting can be for safety purposes or pure aesthetics. These miniature lights can be added to a garden area, side yard, lining a walkway or drive way, and positioned by an entrance way. It's a convenient form of lighting that doesn't require the constant use of batteries, which tend to need replacing on a regular basis. There are styles to suit all landscaping needs.

Sensors are included in the make-up of most solar lights, so that they will turn on when it gets dark. The solar panels on the lights are made up of many cells that each absorbs a certain amount of sunlight. This sunlight is stored during the day and then converted to electricity when it's dark. Many of the larger lights are able to have enough energy to stay on all night long, even during the winter months when the nights are longer.

Lights come in a variety of sizes and each type might be well suited in a specific location. For example, compact lights are great for lining the sidewalk, while taller lights might be better for illuminating an area with large plants and shrubs. Most solar lights are free-standing, which enables them to be placed just about anywhere and at any distance apart. If the light is to be attached to a vertical surface, then the hardware to do so usually comes with each light.

The size of the solar lighting chosen will depend on its purpose. For instance, compact lights are often preferred when illuminating a footpath, but torch-styled lights might be more suitable for a flower garden. Free-standing solar lights don't require any wires, since each is equipped with its own solar panel and sensor. Lights that are added beside a doorway usually have a couple of screws that secure it to the surface around the door.

Outdoor lighting of the solar kind isn't always for adding accents to an area. There are even flood lights that use solar power. These are actually activated by motion, instead of with light.

An average range is about 65 feet, so anything that crosses within this zone will trigger the flood lights. The solar panel for these lights is attached to a long cord that allows it to be placed in an area where it will receive enough sunlight to fully charge.

Stores that specialize in outdoor supplies and landscaping equipment usually carry a large array of solar lights to choose from. Many will provide displays of the lights, so that customers can see how each one looks. It's much easier to pick out a set of outdoor lights if they can actually be seen. While it might be more convenient to purchase solar lights online, sometimes it's hard to tell exactly what they look like from the small picture.

Most online businesses will have a picture of the solar outdoor lighting being sold, but it is often difficult to see all the details in this small photo. There are also many places to find solar lighting that is no longer being manufactured, which means that the price will be very low. Having the option to order from online stores often makes it easier to purchase solar lights after hours, since most stores are only open for a limited time.
