An Introduction to Ebooks and Audio books

What are Ebooks?

We'll start with ebooks first as most people are familiar with the concept. For those that aren't, ebooks are digital books that can be read on your computer or other compatible devices. They can be on a wide variety of topics, everything from instructional to fiction.

Usually they will be in Adobe PDF format, but you can find them in other formats such as executable files (.exe) or formats specific to certain readers such as Mobipocket. Still, PDF remains the most diverse and popular format.

It used to be that ebooks could only be read two ways, either on your computer or by printing it out. Personally, I find reading on my computer to be tiresome and printing them out can become very expensive.

These days, there have been many breakthroughs in technology allowing us to take our ebooks on the road or even to our favourite comfy spot. PDF's can be transferred to your PDA to be read anywhere. Devices like the Sony Portable Reader - PRS-500 were created specifically for ebooks and are nicely designed to fit in your pocket or purse while on the go.

Not only have ebooks come a long way, they are now becoming a huge phenomenon amongst famous authors. Realizing the benefits, many authors are choosing to also offer their books in ebook format to allow and encourage more people to read. This takes us beyond the old standard of just business books (I became familiar via internet marketing) in ebook format, to everything from health and diet to fact and fiction.

It's a wonderful change, and one I believe we should all support.

What are Audio Books?

Well, audio books are simply books in audible form. It's really not a new concept as I believe we are all familiar with the "books on tape" that were founded first for the blind, then as a way of teaching children to learn, and then of course it became popular for instructional purposes like learning a new language.

It wasn't long before people saw the value in having books in audio format. You could take them in the car or in your "walkman" where ever you went.

Now, technology has made it so easy for us to create books on every subject in formats that can easily be transferred to our cell phones, pda's and mp3 players.

Lives have become so much busier and multi-tasking has become a necessity. Throwing your audio book on you favourite device allows you to listen and learn while accomplishing other tasks. I love to load up my ipod and listen while I walk. Others may listen in the car or while performing everyday tasks.

However you choose to enjoy a good book, audio books definitely open doors to so many more possibilities.
