Best Selling Author of 'The Time Traveler's Wife' to Speak at IC Book Fest

IOWA CITY, Iowa - In a season when most city celebrations feature concerts, carnivals and corn-on-the-cob, author Audrey Niffenegger isn?t surprised Iowa City holds a summer book festival.

?Since Iowa City has produced some of the most amazing writers of the last half-century, I think that seems pretty appropriate,? she says by phone from her home in Chicago.

Niffenegger, who penned the best-selling novel ?The Time Traveler?s Wife? and 2009?s ?Her Fearful Symmetry,? will be a featured speaker at the three-day event July 16 to 18, 2010.

She will join the esteemed company of writers known locally, nationally and internationally, including UI alums Jane Smiley, Pulitzer Prize-winner for ?A Thousand Acres,? and screenwriter Nicholas Meyer, who has directed several ?Star Trek? films.

The festival debuted in 2009 and begins this year with an Author Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the University of Iowa?s Main Library. Festivities continue from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in Gibson Square and the nearby UI Main Library, with vendors, music, children?s activities, author talks and demonstrations. Events then spread through downtown Iowa City from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Niffenegger, 47, began her career as a printmaker, painter and photographer, but has always considered herself a writer, as well as an artist.

She enjoys combining both skill sets, creating books from scratch, as she did with her novels-in-pictures, ?The Three Incestuous Sisters? and ?The Adventuress.? Both have since been printed commercially, as well.

She likes writing the stories, making the story boards, setting the type on paper made by her friends and binding the books.

?I?ve been writing since I was tiny. I just never cared too much about publishing anything,? she says. ?I wasn?t especially keen to pursue the path of just being a writer. I wanted to do everything all together.?

That can be a time- and labor-intensive process.

?Depending on the scale, small books take about a year to produce the whole edition, from idea to book,? she says. At the other extreme, ??The Three Incestuous Sisters? took 14 years,? she says, ?during which I got a lot of other stuff done.?

It?s her first full-length novel, however, that has garnered her worldwide attention. ?The Time Traveler?s Wife,? published in 2003, has been an international best-seller and was turned into a movie starring Eric Bana, Rachel McAdams and Marion native Ron Livingston.

That kind of success was ?pretty unreal,? she says, ?because I have been toiling away in a tiny corner of the art world for so long, without expecting a very large audience.

?Even now, it amazes me when someone says, ?I?ve read your books.? Really? That?s odd.?

She spent seven years writing ?Her Fearful Symmetry,? the story of twins who inherit their aunt?s London flat and most of its contents. It comes with all sorts of puzzling caveats and unusual neighbors and landscapes to explore, including a cemetery.

The plot follows a winding path through myriad twists and turns ? some of them macabre.

She?ll read from that book at 11 a.m. Saturday in the UI Main Library?s Shambaugh Auditorium ? without divulging any spoilers.

Her writing process is ?really disorganized, chaotic and unscheduled,? she says. ?When it?s going well, I work all the time. When it?s not, I take myself off and do housework.?

Not surprisingly then, the way she developed her two novels was vastly different.

?With ?The Time Traveler?s Wife,? the original idea was the title. It implied a married couple who have difficulties with time traveling,? she says.

?The second one had a kind of sideways evolution. It started as a novel about a man who can?t leave his apartment and a girl who comes to visit him. Martin and Julia?s subplot was the beginning of the book. As the characters developed, they acquired families and relationships. I worked on it for two years before there ever was a ghost.?

She has been approached about turning ?Symmetry? into a movie, but that would only happen on her terms this time. Clearly upset about the changes made to ?The Time Traveler?s Wife? for the screenplay, she hasn?t even seen the film.

?I didn?t want to see the movie,? she says. ?I read the script, I knew how they changed it, knew they changed the ending.?

With ?Her Fearful Symmetry,? she says, ?This movie would only get made if I had a hand in it.?

In the meantime, she has another novel brewing and a serialized graphic novel, ?The Night Bookmobile,? being published in book form this fall. The comic book/novel aspect of that project brought her back to what she loves best.

?That?s satisfying ? the writing and art together,? she says.

?What I like about art-making and writing books is that I can completely form the thing to the best of my ability and put it out there for anyone who likes it or wants to discover it,? she says.

?Long after I?m dead, people will be able to encounter these things and make what they will out of them.?

By Kyle Martin Staff Writer Monday, April 12, 2010 A committee will review Augusta Fire Department hiring procedures that some commissioners say are keeping good firefighters away. "Thank God we haven't had this issue of a person trying to get into a burning house and they couldn't do their job," Commissioner Joe Jackson said. Hiring procedures put into place three years ago don't credit applicants for certifications they already have, such as EMT certification. Nor do they give credit for experience such as military service, Jackson said. "Is our house out of order?" Commissioner Don Grantham asked when the issue was raised at a committee meeting. Commissioner J.R. Hatney said it was. "I get 25 calls a month from the fire department," Hatney said. The hiring process needs "a complete review" by a subcommittee with input from city human resources, equal employment and administration, he said. Hiring procedures introduced in 2007 include applicant interviews and agility testing, Fire Chief Howard Willis said. The procedures are followed to the letter and candidates are hired from the top scorers down, Willis said. Which is a Lie, and only part of the misconduct that is really going on at The Fire Department. Assistant Chief Christopher James has been wrongfully firing new firefighters in 2009, for an unfair nepotism policy. Then re-hires most of the firefighters, once the department did away with the policy, but has a training program; under James direction, that has encouraged firefighters to harrass, bully, assult, and threaten other firefighters! Official complaints have been issued to Director Ms. Humphrey at the E.O.A. Currently Asst. Chief James and the entire Fire Department is under investigation, for racism, harrassment, terrorisitic threats, and wrongful terminations against fellow firefighters. Firemen along with James that are suspected of criminal activity are: Scott Walker, Lt. Brown/Lt. Lee (under Asst. Chief James), Recruit Firefighters; Myles, mith, Wolmack, Zanwiger, Santadota, Mullins, Johnson, A. Johnson, Parrish, Garcia, and Female recruit Ms. Guest. 4.If You Know anything about Augusta, Aiken Counties (The C.S.R.A)-Corruption, racism, and injustice toward Black Men are common place; especially From The Public School System, Board of Education, Police Departments, and our U.S. Military Branches. But we as Americans, should not expect this kind of inhumanity from an Institution that we all hold dear (especially after 9/11); such as The Fire Department! But the sad truth is that in The Fire Service, there is indeed lots of racism, feminism, and lack of true brotherhood amongst fellow firefighters. Hopefully this new report and criminal investigation will change some very bad practices in The Augusta Fire Department. Weekly testing of a firefighter trainee can get him or her dropped from the program, Willis said. "It's more beneficial when you have somebody ready to go to work," Jackson said. Before joining NBC Augusta 26 she reported on the Spring 2009 Legislative Session at the Minnesota State Capitol (there?s a lot of Georgia marble in that building). She also reported on the battle to fill the Minnesota U.S. Senate seat. Christine graduated from the University of Minnesota in December of 2008 and earned a degree in both Broadcast Journalism and Spanish. During the summer of 2008 she was a weekly guest speaker on a Spanish late night talk show while studying in Spain. Throughout her years at the University of Minnesota she interned at KARE-TV, TPT and was the news director and health reporter for KUOM radio. Christine?s originally from the small town of Saratoga Springs in upstate New York. She moved to Minnesota for school and to row for their Division-1 rowing team. She?s proud of her teams? accomplishments and of being a three-time Big Ten Gold Medalist and 2007 NCCA National Champion. In her free time you can find Christine exploring the Savannah River, reading by the pool and checking out the farmers market. Favorite Story: Early one morning a livestock truck full of pigs toppled over on a main highway in Minnesota. No one was injured, and tons of pigs were running around the highway.
