Hatchet (Gary Paulsen) -

This is by far was my favorite author growing up.  I love Hatchet and I love a lot of his other books.  I love Hatchet because it illustrates the struggles of ordinary life which Brian had before his unfortunate plane crash.  But it also shows how much harder life would be if you had to work to survive, and to appreciate your life in the "real" world.  For some reason, I like books that have a subject of survival.  I just really get immersed in them.  Often times I imagine myself out there, trying to survive.  I honestly don't think I could be able to do it.
